Mystique: Declan Shalvey Sets the X-Men Villain Up for an Espionage Thriller (Exclusive)

As a longtime Marvel fan and avid follower of the enigmatic character that is Mystique, I find myself utterly captivated by this upcoming series. Declan Shalvey‘s creative vision for Mystique is not only intriguing but also pays homage to her rich history within the Marvel Universe. With a focus on making Mystique a villain once again, Shalvey is taking a bold step in dusting off any anti-hero elements that may have lingered over the years.

In the Marvel Universe, Mystique is poised to cement her reputation as one of the cruelest villains. Despite her initial attempts at peace on Krakoa, the X-Men’s sovereign island nation, she was instrumental in bringing about its downfall. Now, separated from her wife (Destiny) and children (Rogue and Nightcrawler), with Krakoa gone, Mystique is embarking on an adventure filled with action, intrigue, and espionage in a new series by writer/artist Declan Shalvey. The story will find Mystique traversing different regions within the Marvel Universe, always pursued by Nick Fury, while one of the series’ main questions revolves around what motivates Mystique to act so violently.

As a passionate gamer, I recently had a chat with Declan Shalvey about his upcoming five-issue “Mystique” limited series, set to hit stores on October 16th. In our conversation, he delved into the location we’ll find Mystique when the first issue arrives and compared her traits with Nick Fury, among other insights. Additionally, Declan shared some behind-the-scenes tidbits about how his creator-owned spy series “Old Dog” aided in crafting this tale. He also discussed the process of designing Mystique’s new outfit, and much more. To top it off, we’re thrilled to unveil an exclusive first look at “Mystique” #1, along with the cover and solicitation for “Mystique” #3.

Getting inside Mystique’s mind

Inquiry: What mental condition does Mystique find herself in at the start of her standalone comic book series? Is she reacting to the downfall of Krakoa, or is there a different cause for the disorder and destruction she seems to be instigating?

As a passionate gamer, let me share my thoughts on adding a touch of mystery to a game:

It’s clear that Krakoa’s decline has impacted Mystique significantly. Her actions may appear disorganized from a distance, but they are meticulously planned pieces of a broader scheme. I won’t delve into her reasons here, but suffice it to say that the current state of mutantkind in the Marvel Universe has caused her to reevaluate her tactics, making her more cunning and merciless.

Mystique vs. Nick Fury

Nick Fury is the perfect counter to Mystique, with both of them having an espionage background. What was it like to bounce these iconic characters off each other?

These two characters share a common spy past and are deeply rooted in the Marvel Universe’s history, yet they are distinct individuals, even opposites. Mystique operates in moral ambiguity, while Nick is a strict, rule-abiding agent. To apprehend Mystique, Nick may have to roll up his sleeves and get dirty, but just how far will he go before he crosses the line?

How Old Dog prepared Shalvey for Mystique

What impact did developing your self-created comic series, Old Dog, have on the creation of the Mystique storyline for you?

It seems like I found my unique narrative voice when crafting the espionage tale for Old Dog, and I smoothly carried it over to Mystique. The book commences powerfully at issue #1, which is quite surprising because Old Dog was originally designed as an attempt to produce a Marvel-esque espionage comic. Now, I’m back at Marvel accomplishing exactly what I had envisioned initially! Isn’t it intriguing how life works out? Additionally, I feel like I’m expanding upon the serial I did for Civil War II: Choosing Sides… that was a Nick Fury Jr story I both wrote and illustrated. It’s rewarding to continue developing this character that I left behind a few years ago.

Mystique’s new costume

Did you have a hand in coming up with Mystique’s new look for the series?

Absolutely, incorporating a fresh costume design was integral to my proposal for her upcoming book. I felt the need for a distinct visual symbol that would set this new chapter apart from her extensive and iconic history in Marvel comics. Her original costume, while timeless, has become synonymous with her character over the years, making it challenging to pinpoint specific periods in her evolution across various titles. This redesign aims to establish a unique identity for this series within her rich and diverse comic book history. Additionally, there’s a subtle reference to the spy attire she wore in the early 2000s in the new design, modernized to suit contemporary fashion trends.

Mystique’s impact on the Marvel Universe

To wrap up, how will this Mystique series impact her status in the Marvel Universe moving forward?

My intention by the conclusion of this book is for the reader to understand fewer aspects of her character, rather than more. I aim to reintroduce an antagonistic quality to Mystique in this series, to portray her as a formidable adversary.

MYSTIQUE #3 (OF 5)

DECLAN SHALVEY (W) o DECLAN SHALVEY (A/C)

The tactical pause in Madripoor escalates into a global crisis as Mystique sets her final moves against S.H.I.E.L.D.! However, who is the instigator of mutant chaos in the Lower Districts now? And what secret agents have been dispatched to counter her?
