Enthusiasts of the manga series “Nana” are once again abuzz with excitement following the publication of a stunning new illustration by its creator. This latest artwork serves to fuel speculation that she may soon resume her work on this beloved series, potentially bringing it back to life in the manga world. It has been over fifteen years since the popular storyline took a break, leaving fans eagerly anticipating any news of its continuation. However, in recent times, the creator has shown increased activity, reigniting the passion of fans and fueling hopes for her eventual return.
Artist Ai Yazawa, renowned for creating works such as “Nana”, “Paradise Kiss”, “Neighborhood Story”, “Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai”, and more, has created a fresh piece of artwork to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Cookie magazine, where her work “Nana” is published. To mark this occasion, Yazawa, along with other contributors to the magazine, produced illustrations accompanied by autographs. The lucky winner of a competition will receive these exclusive pieces. Ai Yazawa’s artwork showcases Nana Osaki with a captivating smile while she smokes a cigarette, demonstrating that her artistic prowess with a pen remains as brilliant as ever.

Ai Yazawa’s Art Is as Great as Ever
This month, Yazawa created another piece of artwork, marking the occasion of her collaboration with UNIQLO to commemorate her 40 years as a mangaka. In this drawing, she depicted Nana Osaki, who will appear on upcoming t-shirts. It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen such active work from this renowned mangaka, and the anticipation for her potential return, hinted at several years ago, has only grown stronger. Among current manga, Nana is truly exceptional, and the possibility of its resurgence has never been more promising.
Initially strangers on a train, Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki develop a strong bond and eventually decide to share an apartment in Tokyo. Nana Osaki enters the city with her punk band, Blast, consisting of Nobuo, Yasushi, and newcomer Shin. With Gaia Records backing them, the band gains popularity, particularly when it’s revealed that Nana Osaki is dating Ren Honjo from Trapnest, a popular band that also includes Reira, Takumi, and Naoki. Over time, the lives of these two Nanas, Blast, and Trapnest become more and more connected.
In 2022, during an interview with Da Vinci, Ai Yazawa expressed that she was feeling great after her art exhibition and had a strong desire to draw again, no matter the scale. The past two years have been particularly active for her, with new collaborations and artworks. Although the future of the mangaka and her renowned work remains uncertain, nobody is more eagerly awaiting the resumption of Nana‘s publication than Ai Yazawa herself.
