2002 saw the debut of the movie “Narc“, where Liotta delivered one of his most impactful performances. Recently, after a span of 23 years, the movie’s writer and director, Joe Carnahan, shared insights about collaborating with Liotta.
In another role, Jason Patrick joins Liotta in the movie “Narc.” This gritty thriller focuses on two unorthodox detectives probing the murder of an undercover cop. Reflecting on this film during an interview to publicize his latest release, the action-packed “Shadow Force,” director Carnahan reminisced about a standout moment during production. Specifically, while working with Liotta, Carnahan experienced a pivotal moment that solidified his success as a filmmaker in his mind.
In essence, Carnahan stated, “Ray was truly exceptional.” He added that during the scene in the car from the movie “Narc,” when Ray spoke about his wife, it was the moment I felt like a real filmmaker, almost as if I was a director. And he recalled Ray saying to him, “Don’t worry, Joe Carnahan, you’ll be fine. You’re going to be alright. Things will work out for you.
Following a recollection that Liotta enjoyed sipping Chablis over crushed ice and had a fear of elevators, which didn’t align with his preconceived notions about the actor, Carnahan went on to say, “To be honest, if it weren’t for that man, I wouldn’t have a career. He brought Narc to life… My main regret is that I didn’t stay in touch with Ray as much as I intended to over the past few years, due to our busy schedules and family commitments. However, I reached out to Jacy, his widow, and penned a heartfelt letter of apology, expressing my gratitude for what he meant to me, his exceptional talent in movies like Narc, Smokin’ Aces, Stretch…, and his remarkable sense of humor.
In line with Carnahan and Drake’s observations, it’s worth noting that Liotta shone brightest in portraying unsavory characters. However, despite this, he managed to win the hearts of many viewers. Carnahan admired how Liotta infused depth into his performances, making even the most unlikable characters seem more relatable. This was evidently demonstrated in a movie where Liotta played one of the main roles, as observed by Carnahan himself.
Ray Liotta Made Viewers Feel For His Villainous Characters
He stated, “Given our current era, sadly, we find ourselves with individuals in power who are reminiscent of caricatures – they’re horrible, amoral, and in control of things. It’s disheartening to think that someone might be a sociopath or maniac, but we have plenty of such characters today. However, when you encounter someone as nuanced as Mark Strong or Ray Liotta, who can skillfully color both within and outside the lines, it’s truly refreshing.
He further explained, ‘You see, it’s important to remember that Ray, portrayed as a villain in Narc, was not just a simple antagonist but a complex character with his own reasons. He was deeply flawed, yet there was a method to his madness, a rationale that made sense to him. It was a harsh approach, one that was questionable, but we understood why he chose it – he was protecting a girl at any cost. I admire such characters because they are not strictly good or evil; they are ambiguous. The best villains evoke sympathy, and Ray is one of them. They may be complicated, but you can’t help but empathize with them. That’s the secret to creating compelling narratives – making audiences feel for these complex characters.’
Carnahan’s Shadow Force will be released on May 9, 2025. Meanwhile, Narc is currently .
