Following a break of 15 years, the franchise is coming back to life on Netflix, with Greta Gerwig directing it. But before that movie goes into production, fans who have a Hulu subscription can stream the most overlooked part of the former series towards the beginning of next month.
Starting June 1st, the movie adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” will be streamable on Hulu. This 2010 high fantasy adventure film is an adaption of the novel first published in 1952. The story unfolds three years after the events of “Prince Caspian”, with Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley), the youngest Pevensie siblings, along with their cousin Eustace Scrubb (Will Poulter), being magically transported back to Narnia. They join forces with King Caspian (Ben Barnes) in a quest to rescue seven missing lords and protect Narnia from an impending evil lurking on a mysterious island.
The third and final movie in Walden Media’s live-action Narnia film series, titled “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” was distributed by 20th Century Fox, unlike the first two installments which were handled by Disney. These earlier films were adaptations of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and “Prince Caspian.” However, due to the underperformance at the box office of “Prince Caspian,” 20th Century Fox took over distribution. Later, in 2019, Disney acquired 20th Century, making them the current holders of the rights to all three Narnia films.
Netflix’s Narnia Reboot Will Adapt The Magician’s Nephew
Originally, Walden Media intended to carry on adapting “The Chronicles of Narnia” into movies for theaters. However, work on a fourth film came to a halt, causing their contract with the C.S. Lewis estate to expire. In 2018, Netflix purchased the rights to produce both films and television series based on “Narnia.” Despite the swift move by Netflix, they too struggled to start development on a new movie. Now, seven years later, preparations are underway for the production of a new live-action “Narnia” film at Shepperton Studios in the UK, which is set to begin this July.
Greta Gerwig is responsible for both writing and directing the Netflix reboot of the classic fantasy series “The Chronicles of Narnia,” specifically focusing on the sixth book, “The Magician’s Nephew” (1955). This upcoming film will function as a prequel to the well-known tale, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” In “The Magician’s Nephew,” we’ll delve into the beginnings of Narnia, uncovering how the White Witch arrived in this magical realm, understanding why it has a human monarchy, discovering the origins of the lamp post, and much more.
For the film “The Magician’s Nephew” set in Narnia, the current lineup includes and . There are ongoing discussions with Meryl Streep and Daniel Craig for significant parts in the production. Meryl Streep might voice a character reimagined as Aslan, while Daniel Craig could play Digory Kirke’s ethically complex uncle, Andrew Ketterly. Unlike typical Netflix productions, “The Magician’s Nephew” will have a two-week exclusive IMAX run in November 2026 before it debuts on the streaming platform on Christmas Day 2026.
Starting from June 1, Hulu subscribers will have the chance to rewatch the adventure “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
