Here is an overview of the game, via Mooneye Studios:

About

In “IKUMA: The Frozen Compass,” you embark on a captivating tale of self-discovery, assuming the roles of cabin boy Sam and his loyal sled dog Ellie. Stranded on an uncharted Arctic island in 1864, you must navigate treacherous landscapes, gather sustenance, and solve mysteries while Sam grapples with his past and learns to embrace his true identity.

IKUMA: The Frozen Compass” draws inspiration from the Franklin Expedition of 1845 and traditional Inuit tales. It offers both single-player and cooperative gameplay experiences, should you wish to explore its chilling mysteries alone or with others.

In 1845, the Franklin expedition embarked on a journey to find a Northwest Passage linking Europe and Asia. The vessels they sailed, named Terror and Erebus, were among the most advanced of their time. Despite this, they never returned home. Remnants of the ships and other artifacts were only discovered relatively recently, leaving the circumstances surrounding their disappearance still a mystery today.

The captivating tale of Franklin and his team has caught our interest well before we embarked on the creation of IKUMA: The Frozen Compass, serving as our primary motivation. Within this game, we recount our fictionalized account of the story by having Sam investigate a mystery that unfolds on an island. Initially, the Humboldt expedition vanished, and Sam’s crew was assigned to determine their fate. Unfortunately, they too met with misfortune, stranding Sam and a lone sled dog on the very same island that served as the final stage for the Humboldt team. Now, Sam has an opportunity to retrace the steps of the lost expedition and unveil the ominous secret responsible for their tragic demise.
