As a die-hard Naruto fan with over two decades of following this magnificent series, I can confidently say that Masashi Kishimoto’s struggle to complete Pain’s Invasion arc was as heart-wrenching for him as it was captivating for us, the readers. The depth and complexity of the ideological clash between Naruto and Nagato were indeed a challenge for the masterful author, but he managed to craft a storyline that not only resonated with fans worldwide but also set the stage for one of the most epic sagas in manga history – the Fourth Great Ninja War.
For quite a few years now, Masashi Kishimoto has wrapped up Naruto, yet the series remains vibrant. Besides Boruto serving as a sequel, every day brings new fans to Naruto. This series is renowned and a significant portion of its success can be attributed to Kishimoto’s work. Over nearly two decades, he dedicated himself to the original Naruto run, and currently, Kishimoto is sharing which arcs posed the biggest challenge when it came to inking them.
The information originates directly from Kishimoto himself during a personal appearance at an event in France. Here, he engaged in discussions about Naruto and Boruto alongside Mikio Ikemoto, the artist behind Boruto. During this Q&A session, a fan asked which arc was most challenging to complete within Naruto. Interestingly enough, Kishimoto revealed that he faced numerous difficulties with the Pain’s Invasion arc.
As stated by Kishimoto, the most challenging storyline to craft was the Pain’s Invasion saga. This wasn’t due to its action sequences, but rather because of the ideological differences between Naruto and Nagato regarding peace. Both characters held contrasting views on the subject, and both were equally valid in their perspectives. Kishimoto confessed that he found it difficult to resolve their conflict satisfactorily, as he wanted Naruto to emerge victorious while still highlighting the complexity of Nagato’s stance.
Without a doubt, Naruto posed significant challenges for Kishimoto, but it was Pain who crafted the most challenging arc in the series. The Invasion by Pain served as a turning point in Naruto’s life and the destiny of the Hidden Leaf Village. Pain’s attack inflicted severe damage on the Akatsuki and compelled the Hidden Leaf to unite the ninja world. Consequently, the Kage Summit ignited the beginning of the Fourth Great Ninja War, making it challenging to envision how that conflict might have unfolded without Pain’s involvement.
If you haven’t explored the Pain’s Invasion storyline yet, you can find the Naruto comic books on the Shonen Jump app. For anyone eager to delve deeper into this popular series, here’s a brief summary of its plot:
