As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent immersed in the Naruto universe, I must say that the evolution of Kawaki’s character in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has me intrigued. The creators’ decision to make him the one who will be evolving more is an interesting twist, especially considering the parallels drawn between the rivalries of Naruto and Sasuke versus Boruto and Kawaki.
The intensity of “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex” continues to escalate in each new installment, as its creators hint at further development for the character Kawaki. “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex” is a follow-up to “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations,” which unfolds three years after the original series’ events. In an unexpected twist, Kawaki manipulated Eida into using her abilities to convince everyone in the Hidden Leaf Village that he was actually Naruto Uzumaki’s son and Boruto had become a wanted fugit, despite not being responsible for the Hokage’s death.
In the new Naruto series, the competition between Boruto and Kawaki is distinct from the rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke in the original manga. This unique dynamic was discussed by Masashi Kishimoto, the creator, and Mikio Ikemoto, the artist and writer, at a fan event in France hosted by Kana (as reported by @UzuRepo on X). They explained that Kawaki’s character is expected to develop more, as Boruto is already a well-developed character at the beginning of the series.
Will Kawaki Improve as a Character in Boruto?
Essentially, Naruto and Sasuke share many similarities, despite their rivalry. They’re not particularly intelligent, they both possess a strong-willed nature, and each has suffered significant losses. Kishimoto highlighted that while these characters have opposing roles in the story, their dynamics are distinctly different from those in the original Naruto series. On the other hand, Boruto and Kawaki embody contrasting personalities. Boruto is a character who underappreciates his good fortune, despite being blessed with much at the outset. In stark contrast, Kawaki has lost everything and fails to recognize his true worth. The rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke, and that of Boruto and Kawaki may be present in the story, but I believe their relationships are significantly different from those portrayed in the original Naruto and Boruto series.
After Ikemoto delved deeper into the contrast between these pairs, it was made clear that the growth and evolution in their relationships will primarily stem from Kawaki. In the dynamic between Naruto and Sasuke, they each challenge one another to prove themselves, but Naruto’s opposition serves as a means for him to express his feelings and grow as a character. Conversely, in the relationship between Boruto and Kawaki, it is Kawaki who demonstrates a strong bond with the main character Boruto, implying that he will be the one undergoing significant development through this rivalry.
After this contrast between their characters, it’s clear that Kawaki will undergo significant development first. Unlike Boruto, who has already matured into a fully-developed character from the get-go, being wise and open-minded, the weight of what he carries is distinct from Kawaki’s. Instead, we’ll see Kawaki demonstrating his growth as a character.
