As a long-time anime enthusiast and connoisseur of the Japanese voice acting world, I must say that the loss of Eiji Yanagisawa leaves a profound void in my heart and the anime community at large. Over four decades, he breathed life into countless characters that have touched the hearts of millions worldwide.
It takes a village to make an anime series and/or movie, with dozens, hundreds, and sometimes thousands of people working side-by-side to depict some of the best animated stories in any medium. Voice actors are often some of the most famous contributors to the anime world and unfortunately, another prolific voice actor in Japan has recently passed away. Voice actor Eiji Yanagisawa has been a part of the voice acting industry since his initial role in the Mobile Suit Gundam series in 1981 and it is with a heavy heart that we confirm that Yanagisawa has passed away.
To pay tribute to Yanagisawa’s legacy, it’s crucial to delve into the anime series he contributed significantly to. As previously stated, Eiji was involved in some of Gundam’s most notable productions during his career, such as Mobile Suit Gundam I, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, and SD Gundam Force. Beyond his work on the mech franchise, Yanagisawa also took on important roles in numerous other series like Naruto: Shippuden, Kengan Ashura, Baki The Grappler, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Digimon Frontier, Detective Conan, and many more. In addition to his contributions to the anime world, Eiji also provided voiceovers for Western projects in Japan including CSI: New York, CSI: Miami, The World is Not Enough, Stargate Atlantis, Lethal Weapon 3, and others.
Production Baobab’s Official Statement
Production Baobab, the talent agency run by Yanagisawa, announced that their beloved client Eiji Yanagisawa (aged 57) passed away on November 12th, 2024 following a brain stem hemorrhage. We want to express our heartfelt appreciation for the compassion demonstrated towards him throughout his life and share the sad news of his passing. The funeral was held privately among close relatives only. Regrettably, there has been a delay in sharing this information due to the family’s preferences.
The Anime Characters of Eiji Yanagisawa
In the world of Naruto, Eiji stepped into the shoes of Genzo – an early character from the shonen series. Unlike Naruto or Sasuke who could summon powerful Rasengan and Chidori techniques, Genzo was a resident of the Hidden Leaf Village who specialized in something entirely different: capturing precious moments on camera for future generations. Genzo was one of Konoha’s most skilled photographers; however, he wasn’t always content with his position if things didn’t go as planned.
In the realm of the Gundam series, Eiji Yanagisawa debuted as the character Slender in Mobile Suit Gundam I. Unlike Amuro and the Earth Federation, Slender was a faithful follower of the Principality of Zeon, working alongside the antagonist Char. Tragically, Slender perished during combat with the Gundam, demonstrating that no character is invulnerable in the Gundam universe. In Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, Yanagisawa played Dr. Ulen Hibiki, and in SD Gundam Force, he voiced both Gunbike and Zapper Zaku. Clearly, Yanagisawa’s acting career had a strong connection to the Gundam universe.
Eiji Yanagisawa, a gifted voice artist, is deeply regretted within the realm of anime. Our sympathies go out to those closest to him as they navigate through this challenging period.
