Title Revision: “Boruto: The Two Whirling Vortexes” – A sequel that surpasses its predecessor in several aspects, presenting the most compelling Boruto tales yet. However, as the next generation takes center stage in the new series, there are some beloved characters from the Hidden Leaf Village who seem to have been overshadowed. Among them is a character who once shone brightly during the Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden era, and it’s high time they regained their prominence.
From the get-go, Rock Lee plunged headfirst into a fight that remains one of the most memorable battles in the series even to this day, having been part of the “Chunin Exams.” Unlike Naruto and Sasuke who could rely on ninjutsu, Rock Lee honed his physical prowess through rigorous training. Although he wasn’t able to overcome Gaara and his sand abilities, Rock Lee left a lasting impact that had anime enthusiasts eagerly anticipating his comeback time and again. The legacy has been carried forward with Rock Lee’s son, Metal Lee, but the Boruto series has fallen short in delivering the full impact of its powerhouse character.
Where Boruto Stumbles With Rock Lee
Although Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex primarily revolve around the younger generation of Konoha’s ninjas, they have significantly underutilized Rock Lee compared to many veteran characters such as Kakashi, Might Guy, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke, and others. Instead, it is these older characters who frequently engage in battles alongside the newcomers. Interestingly, Rock Lee is rarely involved, and crucial aspects of his recent past remain undisclosed.
Currently, Metal Lee’s mother remains unknown to ‘Naruto’ fans, which is perplexing given that most other ninjas from the initial two series have their parents identified. Even though characters like Naruto and Sasuke got married (to Hinata and Sakura respectively), it seems this unsolved mystery may continue for some time. This situation appears to overlook Rock Lee, a character who continues to be popular among Masashi Kishomoto’s collection of characters, suggesting that he might be neglected by the series.
How Boruto Can Redeem Rock Lee
In light of Might Guy serving as Rock Lee’s inspiration and having such an impactful role in the final arc of Shippuden, particularly during his epic battle with Madara Uchiha, it seems fitting for Lee to make a significant comeback in the current series, facing off against new adversaries. Given that Masashi Kishimoto is back as writer, it would be an exciting development to see Rock Lee demonstrate feats on par with those of his teacher.
From my perspective, it seems Studio Pierrot, responsible for the anime adaptation of Hidden Leaf Village, has been relatively tranquil as of late. Given their ongoing work on “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War,” which concludes this year with its fourth and final season, we might expect some updates soon. Meanwhile, the Two Blue Vortex manga series keeps unfolding, brimming with significant events and battles that remain unanimated to date.
