Sonia Fowler’s live birth on screen in the deteriorating Queen Vic remains one of her most impactful character moments, and Natalie Cassidy, an EastEnders star, has disclosed a concealed explanation behind why the soap’s 40th anniversary episode in February was particularly significant.
She muses, “The live broadcast ran smoothly, just as if it were a well-oiled machine.” At the conclusion, I had the privilege of delivering the final narration, which filled me with great pride. When Chris Clenshaw informed me, I couldn’t help but shed tears – it felt like something Dot would have done, had June Brown still been among us.
After Sonia gave birth, I passed the newborn to its actual mother on the film set inside the studio. Then, I hurried towards the ambulance, received a prop baby, and prepared to deliver my speech during the montage sequence.
I requested a screen displaying the action as it happened, similar to what the director was seeing and transmitting. My intention was to superimpose the appropriate text onto the visuals, ensuring the correct tone and synchronization.
Performing that task was rather complex, and it had the potential to be disruptive, almost pulling me away from the immersion of the scene.
I had the ability to perform the task independently of the monitor, yet I sought approval from our talented director, Lance Kneeshaw, to use it. The monitor proved beneficial in giving me a clear picture and enabling me to strike each crucial point accurately.
Alongside the community grappling with the sad news of Martin Fowler’s passing and Denise Fox opting for Jack Branning over Ravi Gulati, Phil Mitchell’s hospitalization following a mental collapse was one of the significant events that Cassidy felt needed careful punctuation.
The star offers high accolades for Steve McFadden’s portrayal of Phil, not merely during the live episode and the mental health narrative arc, but consistently over the past three decades while collaborating with him on set.

He’s absolutely amazing. I strongly recommended on Instagram that he deserves a BAFTA. Steve has been my friend for quite some time now, and I’ve learned so much from him throughout our friendship. His dedication and work ethic are simply astounding.
Surprisingly enough, the most touching moment from my recent week wasn’t lengthy but rather a brief exchange between Sonia and Phil. What struck me was the subtle nod to their past, hinting at their shared history. Given that Sonia had feelings for his deceased godson Jamie, there’s always an underlying connection between them.

4. “Those words made me cry; they depicted a seemingly ordinary, brief moment, but it was full of emotional weight. I’m glad I could bid farewell to Steve in such a way.”
5. “The lines stirred up tears within me; they portrayed what appeared to be an inconsequential, short episode, yet it held deep sentiment for me. I’m grateful that I got the chance to say goodbye to Steve in this manner.”
6. “Reading those words caused me to weep; it was a moment that seemed ordinary and brief, but it carried significant emotion. I’m happy that I could bid farewell to Steve in this way.”
