2025 has seen a fair share of notable departures among the EastEnders’ cast, and I must admit, the news of Natalie Cassidy‘s exit from the show after an impressive 32-year run as Sonia is one that leaves me eager for the upcoming episodes.

View Urgent ForecastCassidy expressed her plan to depart as early as January of the current year, revealing a statement where she articulated that she felt it was appropriate to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Now, she’s shared a bit more insight into her choice, mentioning to Bella Magazine that she felt it was time for a change, having been in the same place for 32 years.
She clarified: “I’m really fond of EastEnders, but it’s important to remember that it’s not possible for everyone to contribute everything. EastEnders operates like a factory, employing around 60 actors and 300 staff members.
It’s not feasible for them to accommodate someone who requests extended time off on short notice for multiple occasions. It seems unfair.

More recently, Sonia managed to make it through the catastrophe caused by the 40th anniversary explosion at Queen Vic. She went on to have a safe delivery of her baby, Julia. However, tragically, both her partner, Reiss Colwell, and her former husband, Martin Fowler, perished in the incident.
We don’t know for sure yet which series events will prompt the character’s exit, but we’re excited to discover the answer in the coming weeks.
When Cassidy first announced his decision, Chris Clenshaw, the executive producer, stated: “For 31 years on EastEnders, Natalie has been part of some of the most memorable and dramatic storylines. Through her portrayal of Sonia, she has become a beloved character among the viewers.
