Two decades following “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,” the Star Wars section on Disney+ is thriving and welcoming back characters from the prequels. Notably, Ewan McGregor headlined his own Disney+ series, “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi,” which also saw the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. After “Kenobi,” Christensen resurfaced in “Star Wars: Ahsoka,” once more playing Anakin to guide his former pupil on her treacherous journey. With audiences delighted to see these familiar faces again after so many years, speculation has been rampant about whether Natalie Portman‘s Padme Amidala might make a comeback on the small screen.
Nonetheless, here’s a possible scenario for Natalie Portman to reprise her role as a new character who bears a resemblance to Padmé: one that could effortlessly blend with the anticipated storyline of Season 2 of Ahsoka.
The Finale of Ahsoka Brought Pivotal Star Wars Characters Into Live-Action
At the culmination of Ahsoka‘s first season, Ray Stevenson’s deceased Jedi, Baylon Skoll, found himself atop one of three monumental statues sculpted into the mountains of Peridea. These colossal figures were representations of the Mortis gods – mystical beings residing in the distant realm of Wild Space on Mortis. The Mortis gods comprised of three entities: the Daughter, embodying the light side of the Force; the Son, symbolizing the dark side of the Force; and the Father, who ensured harmony by balancing these two forces.
In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the deities from Mortis held a crucial part and hinted at the destiny not just of the galaxy but also Anakin’s role as the Chosen One. When Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano met a trio on Mortis in Season 3, it was the Daughter who met an untimely death at the hands of the Son. Exhausting her remaining vitality, she revived Ahsoka, who had likewise been felled by the Son’s attack.
Following the daughter’s demise, darkness overpowers Mortis as no one remains to counteract the son’s powers. To halt this encroaching darkness, the father sacrifices himself, providing an opportunity for Anakin to vanquish the son. With the deaths of all three deities of Mortis and Anakin declining to assume the father’s role, the Force is disrupted irreversibly. On his deathbed, the father confides in Anakin that he is the Chosen One destined to rectify these events and restore balance to the Force, though Anakin hesitates to accept this responsibility at that moment on Mortis.
Before the appearance of Ahsoka, the Mortis gods, although part of the canon, were only known from the animated series. Throughout the storyline of Ahsoka, Skoll frequently mentions his quest for something much more significant than power. It isn’t until the unveiling of the statues that Skoll’s purpose and the striking similarity between Mortis and Peridea become apparent.
Regardless of whether his aim is to revive the gods of Mortis, claim the power of the Father, or something else entirely, all his past actions were directed towards reaching Peridea, where he hoped to discover the Mortis statues and their hidden secrets. Notably, the Daughter statue has been destroyed, but the Father and Son remain undamaged, possibly suggesting that the Daughter’s spirit continues to reside within Ahsoka.
The History Behind the Mother Is the Key to Natalie Portman’s Possible Return
As Ahsoka’s bond with the Daughter and Skoll’s proximity to the Father indicate, it seems that Season 2 of Ahsoka will likely explore further details about the Mortis deities. This is a realm where speculation hints Natalie Portman could play a role.
Apart from the Father, the Son, and the Daughter, there was also the Mother – a woman who once lived among humans before serving the deities of Mortis on their home planet. The Mother worked in harmony with the Father, maintaining equilibrium between the Son and Daughter within this unique family of four. However, unlike the gods, the Mother continued to grow older with time.
REALTED: Star Wars Fixed One of Its Biggest Problems With Its Best Movie
Trying to achieve immortality so she could stay with her companions, the Mother secretly gained forbidden power, which the Father was unaware of; a power that ultimately tainted her spirit and turned her into the malevolent being known as Abeloth. When the Father discovered the Mother’s deception, he and their offspring imprisoned Abeloth and escaped from their home planet to a new world called Mortis, leaving Abeloth isolated and powerless on the old planet.
Following the tragic demise of the Father, Daughter, and Son during The Clone Wars, there’s a chance that Abeolth might try to break free from her confinement and cause chaos throughout the galaxy.
Abeolth’s Abilities and How They Connect to Padme
In her metamorphosis into Abeloth, the Mother’s power was so immense and intimidating that it made the Mortis gods tremble with fear. This formidable power brought about a darker incarnation of Padme Amidala. Abeloth is uniquely capable of changing her appearance whenever she desires, and frequently takes on the body of someone nearby or assumes the likeness of an important figure to whoever she encounters as a mental strategy. With Anakin’s Force spirit keeping watch over Ahsoka while she and Sabine are marooned on Peridea, it seems fitting for Abeloth to adopt the visage of one of Ahsoka’s dearest friends and Anakin’s spouse.
In the moment when the Daughter transferred her last bit of life energy to Ahsoka, there has been ongoing speculation about whether Ahsoka is actually a reborn form of the Daughter and an embodiment of the light side of the Force, or if she merely assimilated some of the Daughter’s spirit within herself. Following the events on Mortis, Morai, the owl-like pet of the Daughter, has been observed following Ahsoka, often signaling her arrival or significant moments for Ahsoka. If Ahsoka is indeed a reincarnation of the Daughter, and Baylon Skoll seeks to claim the Father’s power in some way, that leaves only the Son as a potential ally. If the Father, Daughter, and Son are the key to stopping any damage caused by Abeloth, Ahsoka and Skoll might need to collaborate earlier than expected to prevent Abeloth from being destroyed. The thought of having to confront or even defeat a likeness of Padme Amidala would be as heart-wrenching for Ashoka as it was when she had to engage in battle with Darth Vader.
If Skoll needs the Mortis Blade to eliminate Abeloth and a part of the Daughter dwelling within Ahsoka, it means that both Abeloth and Ahsoka might share an adversary. In such a scenario, they could be compelled to form an alliance out of necessity. The fact that Abeloth appears like Padme Amidala poses a significant risk for Ahsoka, as distinguishing the real Padme she once loved from this deceitful likeness might become challenging. This situation mirrors Ahsoka’s ongoing struggle to accept that her former master, Anakin, transformed into the Sith lord she no longer recognized and could fully embrace. If Ahsoka encounters a similar predicament again but with Padme in place of Anakin, it might reopen the emotional wounds left by Anakin’s descent to the dark side.
One alternative interpretation might involve Abeloth taking over the role of the dark side’s manifestation, while Ahsoka serves as the Daughter, Anakin as the Father, and Padme’s sinister counterpart assumes the Son position. This unusual trio, who once shared a deep bond during the Clone Wars, would come together in an unconventional manner compared to their past relationships, forming a twisted trinity.
Natalie Portman’s reappearance in Star Wars as Abeloth presents an intriguing turn of events. Given that Abeloth adopts the likeness of someone deeply loved by Ahsoka and is linked to her lost master who fell to the dark side, the emotional intensity for Season 2 of Ahsoka could reach unprecedented heights.
