Natasha Lyonne Reveals Why Poker Face Takes a Radical Turn in Season 2

*Warning – contains spoilers for Poker Face season 2 episodes 1-3*

The first two episodes of Poker Face season 2 were very much business as usual.

Absolutely, yet maintaining the structure of Season 1, we find our protagonist, Charlie, portrayed by Natasha Lyonne, evading gangsters under the new leadership of Rhea Perlman’s character Beatrix Hasp. As Charlie flees from one town to another, she encounters a series of murders along the way.

Later, episode 3 delved deeply into the main plotline, featuring Hasp kidnapping Charlie, the introduction of John Mulaney as a crooked FBI agent, and the reappearance of Simon Helberg’s character, Luca Clark.

This particular episode deviated somewhat from the usual pattern, yet its conclusion stood out significantly. Instead of altering the familiar formula, it erased the hit on Charlie and seemed to wrap up the mob narrative altogether.

This plot development means Charlie is no longer bound for the remainder of the series, allowing her to chart her own course freely without constantly checking behind her. Lyonne has recently shared insights into their reasoning for taking this approach in the show’s narrative.

The first three episodes of both the initial and final seasons, as well as one more, follow a serialized narrative focusing on Charlie’s role as a driver.

Or:

The opening episodes of the first and last seasons, plus an additional one, have a serialised storyline centered around Charlie’s job as a driver.

However, these standalone episodes are more than just individual pieces; they possess the ability to thrive independently. Each one could be considered a self-contained gem, offering a compact, complete narrative that feels like a miniature masterpiece.

I find it entertaining to watch shows where characters embody Columbo. You can tune in whenever you like. Although John Cassavetes’ role in Étude in Black might seem out of place, it’s enjoyable to see him in that setting. I’m not analyzing it too deeply.

Notable actors scheduled to make appearances throughout the second season of Poker Face are Adrienne C Moore, Alia Shawkat, Awkwafina, BJ Novak, Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith, Corey Hawkins, David Krumholtz, Gaby Hoffmann, Haley Joel Osment, John Cho, Justin Theroux, Kumail Nanjiani, Margo Martindale, Melanie Lynskey, and Sam Richardson.
