Nathan Fillion Based His Superman Character on a Surprising Sitcom Legend

Among the fascinating characters set to appear in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie is the spirited and charming Green Lantern named Guy Gardner, portrayed by the incredibly versatile Nathan Fillion. While fans have already caught glimpses of Gardner in trailers, the way Fillion brings this beloved character to life has certainly piqued interest. This intrigue is bound to grow when the film finally premieres, but it might surprise you who inspired Fillion’s portrayal of Guy. During an interview with the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, Fillion disclosed that a renowned sitcom legend was his inspiration for the character.

Hosts Frankey Smith, Tyler Coates, and Coy Jandreau asked Fillion about portraying Guy Gardner on the big screen, specifically how he balances his boastful character with his endearing traits. At this point, Fillion shared that he drew inspiration from Sophia, a character played by Estelle Getty in The Golden Girls.

In essence, Fillion drew inspiration from Estelle Getty’s character in Golden Girls, who was known for her straightforward and unfiltered speech. He expressed gratitude to her with the words, “Thank you, Estelle Getty. Thank you.” This character, as it turns out, had experienced a traumatic event – being hit by a bus which led to a coma and some brain damage, according to Fillion. As a result, this character became slightly unpredictable or ‘off.’

Apart from discussing other potential hairstyles, the team firmly decided on replicating Gardner’s signature bowl cut for the movie version, as expressed by Fillion: “There were discussions about various hairdos. We considered several options. I was a strong advocate for the bowl cut throughout. It’s official. It’s finalized. If we don’t go with the bowl cut, we’ll face consequences,” Fillion stated.

In addition, Fillion was questioned about whether there were greater pressures in portraying an unconventional character, but Fillion expressed the opposite viewpoint. He stated, “In my opinion, if anything, there’s a sense of liberation. I think the real pressure and stress would likely be on David [the character playing Superman]. After all, good luck! The audience has a lot of expectations. But when you’re introducing something new to some people, it’s entirely up to you. Essentially, I get to shape this character as I see fit.

Later on, Smith inquired about a topic that every Lantern enthusiast is eager to learn – the types of constructs used in the movie by Guy. When Smith enquired if any constructs would appear in the film, Fillion confirmed with a definite “Yes”, but when asked for more details, Fillion played coy and gave a more ambiguous response. “Just what you’d expect from Guy Gardner,” Fillion hinted. “If someone said, ‘There’s an emergency. We need a Green Lantern,’ the last person you’d want is Guy Gardner.” Fillion added with a chuckle, “There are countless constructs scattered across the universe. ‘Oh great, not Guy. Not Guy.’ But that’s who you get. ‘Darn it! Darn it!’

Superman soars into theaters on July 11th.
