As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the reaction to Naughty Dog’s new sci-fi IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, has left me scratching my head. Given their stellar track record with critically acclaimed games like Uncharted and The Last of Us series, I was genuinely excited for this fresh take on a new universe.
Last night at The Game Awards 2024, Naughty Dog unveiled a new PS5 title, marking their first project since 2013 that isn’t Uncharted or The Last of Us. The game is an entirely new sci-fi intellectual property titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. As of now, there’s no news regarding its release date, but PlayStation enthusiasts can enjoy a 4-minute trailer filled with intricate details to analyze. However, the response to this game has been predominantly negative, with more criticisms than praise thus far.
There seems to be some confusion about what specific factors have led to such a polarized reaction towards The Last of Us Part 2. Despite the occasional criticism, Naughty Dog games have consistently been commercial successes, garnering critical acclaim and awards. This has held true for titles like The Last of Us Part 2, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and The Last of Us. The one minor blemish on the studio’s recent stellar track record was 2017’s Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which fell short in terms of commercial success, critical reception, and awards.
On the Naughty Dog edition of the trailer, comments are now turned off, but they’re still available on the PlayStation version. Unfortunately, the majority of the comments aren’t positive towards the game.
“It’s hard to fathom that this studio produced the Uncharted series,” says one comment. “What’s even more shocking is that Sony chose to allow comments in their trailer,” remarks another widely-appreciated comment.
A significant chunk, if not most, of the game’s criticism appears to be directed at its protagonist. Other points of contention include the excessive product placements in the trailer and the tone or writing style of certain parts of it.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has had a rough beginning, which can be tough to recover from in some games. Initial impressions matter greatly. However, given Naughty Dog’s immense talent and resources, a rocky start might not be as concerning. This game is expected to at least be good and sell well. The real question will be if it can approach the acclaim and sales success that Naughty Dog has previously achieved. As one of the most esteemed studios in gaming, this new IP carries massive expectations. Therefore, a rocky start is far from desirable.
Currently, neither PlayStation nor Naughty Dog have responded to the criticism that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been facing. Should their stance alter, we’ll promptly provide an update on the situation.
