2022 whispers hinted at the creation of an MMORPG set within the Horizon universe by PlayStation. However, recent intel suggests that this project might have been put on hold. As pointed out by Reddit user –R on ResetEra, developers working on projects code-named Pantera, H, and J under NCSoft were reportedly instructed to cease their work according to MTN.
The latest updates show that the production of the three games came to a stop towards the end of 2024, and it was announced at the beginning of this year that the development teams would be moving to other projects. Among these shelved games, there’s speculation that Project H might turn out to be the anticipated Horizon MMORPG.
It was also observed by R that certain team members leaving from NCSoft’s development squads align with the MTN report’s timeline, strengthening the notion that these projects could be terminated. Neither NCSoft nor PlayStation have officially acknowledged or announced anything about a Horizon MMO, let alone its potential cancellation.
Among these games, Project J remains unnamed, but Pantera is anticipated to be a fresh installment in the Lineage series, internally referred to as “Project Raise Lineage M“.
It’s possible that the recent cancellation of projects is an extension of Sony PlayStation’s strategy to wind down the production of live-service games. Lately, it seems that Sony has halted development on undisclosed titles at Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games. This decision could be linked to the underperformance of Concord, which was abruptly closed down just weeks after its launch.
NCSoft has a rich background in creating Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs), and one of its well-liked western titles is “Guild Wars 2”. When whispers about the upcoming MMO, dubbed “Horizon”, surfaced, NCSoft was rather secretive about the game, choosing to say: “It’s challenging to confirm details about projects that are still being developed in secret.
Although it’s possible that the Horizon series might not develop into an MMO, enthusiasts can explore the single-player versions instead, such as the latest remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn. Here’s our review for the remaster if you’d like to know more.
