Ne Zha 2 Set to Shatter Avengers and Star Wars Box Office Records

Since its release in China and various international territories earlier this month, “Ne Zha 2” has been rapidly dominating the global box office and is on track to surpass films like “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” This animated sequel was already a massive success in China, and within just a couple of weeks, it broke the record for highest grossing animated film, previously held by Disney’s “Inside Out 2.” However, “Ne Zha 2” shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

In its fourth week in theaters, the Chinese film Ne Zha 2 has not only broken box office records as the highest-grossing movie in China’s history but is poised to dethrone three major global blockbusters from the top ten highest grossing films list. According to a new report from Collider, the film’s latest weekend earnings have pushed it past $1.8 billion USD, suggesting that if its success continues across both Chinese and international markets, it could surpass films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Ne Zha 2 Is Taking Over the World

The sequel to “Ne Zha” premiered exclusively in Chinese theaters at the end of January and has rapidly dominated the country since then. Last week, this movie surpassed all other animated films as the highest-grossing of its kind with over $1.6 billion USD earned in China alone. Furthermore, it garnered an extra $12 million USD from its limited screenings in North America. Although it may not be the top domestic earner compared to other releases, its impressive box office performance in China makes it one of the most successful feature film premieres ever, regardless of genre.

As I stand by, the anticipation swells for Ne Zha 2, a film projected to surpass $2 billion USD at the Chinese box office before wrapping up its screenings. If it manages to achieve this feat, it will comfortably outshine Spider-Man: No Way Home’s lifetime gross of $1.9 billion USD. To further add to its luster, should it garner an additional $2.7 billion USD, it would surpass both Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in terms of global success. Remarkably, this impressive performance is primarily driven by the Chinese market, making its achievements all the more remarkable.

What Is Ne Zha 2 Anyway?

Under the direction of Yu Yang for Beijin Enlight Pictures, Ne Zha 2 serves as a follow-up to the 2019 release Ne Zha, continuing its adaptation of “The Investiture of the Gods,” a collection of tales penned during China’s Ming dynasty. The plotline suggests, “After the celestial thunder, Ne Zha and Ao Bing miraculously survived as Spirits but were destined to vanish completely. Taiyi aims to reconstitute their human forms using the Seven-colored Precious Lotus. Yet, while attempting this restoration, numerous challenges arise. Will the future of Ne Zha and Ao Bing unfold as planned?

However, the movie has garnered significant praise online because of its impressive action sequences and stunning environmental animation. Fans in North America have had opportunities to view it during screenings across the region, and if its performance in China continues, there’s a strong possibility that it will remain on the global box office for an extended period, potentially making it even more successful.
