10 relaxing games to get your cosy gaming fix

The following list of recommendations was provided by Ryan Janes, author of The Most Relaxing Video Games (available now from Pen and Sword Books).

A Little to the Left

Have you ever experienced that sense of satisfaction that comes from meticulously arranging items on your desk, such as aligning your pens in order of size or stacking papers so none stick out and disrupt the perfect alignment? Similarly, do you find a certain pleasure in alphabetizing your books on the shelf?

In A Little to the Left, the sense of fulfillment it provides is similar to what one might feel when organizing household chores, but with an added twist: it incorporates subtle puzzle elements. For instance, a stack of buttons can be sorted in multiple ways, not just by color. It’s like giving your soul a busy yet rewarding task.

I’m thrilled to share that “A Little to the Left” is currently accessible across multiple platforms! You can grab a copy on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or even on your mobile device. If you prefer, you can order it from Amazon, or simply find it on your preferred platform. Enjoy the gameplay!

51 Worldwide Games

51 Worldwide Games is a beloved choice when it comes to gathering a variety of tabletop and card games, perfect for some casual fun or multiple rounds during the festive season like Christmas.

This game offers a variety of entertaining options that are welcoming with familiar choices such as chess and Four in a Row. It also excels at introducing players to less common games like Carrom, Shogi, and Hanafuda, some of which were so intriguing that I ended up purchasing their real-life versions. In essence, it’s a treasure trove filled with classic games suitable for all ages.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

2020’s lockdown was a challenging time for us, but this game became our escape, significantly helping my wife and me cope with the harsh realities. It likely did the same for many other gamers as well.

On each visit, your sunny island, filled with adorable animal villagers and a laid-back atmosphere, felt like a personal getaway, where you could customize your experience. Whether that meant arranging landmarks on your beach, decorating your house with Mario-style furnishings, or curating the museum’s collection of fish, bugs, and art for others to appreciate, every moment was a delightful escape tailored just for you.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now on Nintendo Switch – order from Amazon.

Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep

The ocean possesses a unique blend of captivating and tranquil qualities that can be equally appreciated in different ways. For instance, I find myself both awestruck and relaxed when I sit on the coastline sipping beer, marveling at its immense expanse, or when I meander through an aquarium, spellbound by the diverse marine life it shelters.

Each time I revisit Endless Ocean 2, it’s the immersive documentary-like aspect that keeps pulling me in. The game lets me peacefully explore the underwater world at my own pace, interacting with a multitude of marine species along the way. It’s deliberately slow, offering a much-needed respite from the fast-paced games I usually play. This pace allows me to savor the serenity of the environment and marvel at its fascinating aquatic life.

Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep is out now for Nintendo Wii – order from Amazon.

New Pokémon Snap

In “New Pokémon Snap,” we witness an alternate perspective of the Pokémon universe, straying away from the conventional battlefield setting. Instead, it focuses on presenting these adorable beasts in their natural habitats, allowing them to exhibit their animalistic traits uninhibitedly.

Equipped with a camera, your task is to capture the finest images of Pokémon, earning points for aspects such as composition, angle, and timing. It’s quite similar to playing an on-rails shooter game, but without the bullets. When you manage to snap the perfect photo of a Squirtle surfing, try holding back your inner David Attenborough, because describing it might be irresistible!

New Pokémon Snap is available now on Nintendo Switch – order from Amazon.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Essentially, Microsoft’s technological wonder serves as a key that grants you unlimited access to travel the globe by airplane, while eliminating the hassles and stresses typically associated with airports.

Regardless if it’s exploring famous landmarks such as the glittering Las Vegas at night or the majestic Mount Fuji in Japan, or revisiting nostalgic spots, each journey can evoke emotions, inspire wonder, or offer a mix of both.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available now on Xbox and PC – order from Amazon.

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

As a passionate movie-goer, let me tell you, there’s no experience quite like a thrilling road trip. OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast might just be the ultimate ride, offering the chance to speed past iconic landmarks like the majestic Colosseum, the ancient ruins of Egypt, and the vibrant tulip fields of Holland – all within minutes! It’s a breathtaking journey that leaves you craving for more.

As a movie buff, I’d say it’s like discovering an overlooked gem in the world of video games – an adrenaline-pumping, globe-trotting racer that’s hard to come by these days. Its laid-back gameplay and captivating locations offer a relaxing yet thrilling experience, making it ideal for winding down. Got a cool car? Yep. Breathtaking views? Absolutely. Catchy soundtrack? Definitely. A virtual road trip you’ll never forget? You bet!

Picross Series

At our home, we sometimes refer to them as time-swallowing puzzles. These grid-based numerical deduction games involve players gradually figuring out which squares need shading and which don’t, often with hundreds of possibilities. The completed puzzle reveals a pixelated image, ranging from complex structures like suspension bridges to everyday objects such as kettles.

Instead of crosswords and Sudoku, consider switching to Picross when you need a break from demanding days. It’s a great way to unwind, helping your mind relax and refresh.

The Picross S+ collection is available now on Nintendo Switch – order from the eShop.

Professor Layton Series

The Professor Layton series, a blend of alluring tales filled with secrets and puzzles, has kept many brains guessing for numerous years.

As a movie buff, if you’re not captivated by the British allure of the Professor and his young assistant Luke, then you’ll be gripped by each thrilling escapade filled with mind-bending puzzles that will have you cheering aloud as you crack each one. These games are like a detective novel or puzzle book brought to life, and just like those, you’ll find yourself curled up comfortably with a hot cup of tea, eager to solve their intriguing riddles.

Tetris Effect: Connected

In all my gaming history, I would have never expected that a simple game like Tetris could stir emotions within me as deeply as this particular version has. It’s not just a game; it’s an immersive experience, one that can provoke feelings of joy and optimism through its mesmerizing landscapes and enthralling melodies.

Fundamentally, it’s still the classic Tetris game, but with a captivating and thoughtful style, it offers a fresh perspective on this timeless series. In these times of stress, sorrow, and anxiety, a game like Tetris Effect: Connected is a treasure – an extraordinary encounter that can illuminate even the gloomiest moments.
