It’s now over two years since the launch of “Need for Speed Unbound”, and there’s no sign yet of a new game in the series coming up. This morning, EA unveiled Battlefield Studios, a team of developers dedicated to creating the next Battlefield title. Notably, Need for Speed developer Criterion Games was one of the four teams mentioned, hinting at their ongoing work on Battlefield since September 2023. While this news has left many racing game enthusiasts pondering about the future of the series, Battlefield’s boss Vince Zampella reassured Eurogamer that Need for Speed is not being overlooked.
According to Zampella, the team working on “The Need for Speed” at Criterion is now collaborating with their colleagues who are developing Battlefield. In order to better understand the needs of our “Need for Speed” community over the past year and incorporate their feedback into “Unbound”, we have decided to make some changes in our approach to the franchise. Our aim is to reintroduce Need for Speed in fresh, exciting ways based on what our players desire.
In summary, Zampella’s statement suggests that Need for Speed will persist, but it might take some time before a new game is launched. Eurogamer hints that there isn’t a new game underway at the moment. Fervently hoping for an impressive sequel to Need for Speed Unbound, one that meets the demands of the gaming community. It remains uncertain if there will be further updates to Need for Speed Unbound in the interim, based on Zampella’s remarks.
The Need for Speed series originated in 1994 and has continued to expand with numerous installments over the years. Occasionally, a pause can benefit an ongoing franchise, as it offers more time for development, leading to a better overall game. Upon its debut, Need for Speed Unbound generally received positive reviews, earning Metacritic scores of 77 on PS5, 76 on Xbox, and 73 on PC. While these aren’t poor marks, there’s certainly potential for further enhancement.
Zampella’s remarks about catering to fans and steering Need for Speed towards innovative paths might prove beneficial. Based on the response to Unbound, it appears that EA should invest more in the series, offering something fresh. Interestingly, fans have been expressing similar concerns about Battlefield for quite some time now, so perhaps it’s wise for EA to concentrate on refining one franchise while allowing another some space to develop. When Need for Speed eventually returns, this period of quiet might turn out to be advantageous.
