As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that Stalker 2 has been quite the rollercoaster ride, much like the game itself. Having weathered numerous development storms and played countless bug-filled games, I can confidently say that Stalker’s heart shines brighter than ever amidst its technical hiccups.
It seems that Stalker 2’s debut on PC last month followed a pattern that was likely anticipated. The game has endured over a decade of development difficulties, compounded by the harsh reality of war in its native land. Add to this the well-known issue of buggy yet exceptional games in the Stalker series, and Stalker 2 found itself, as our reviewer Josh put it, plagued with performance problems and bugs that “failed to obscure the mad, wonderful essence of Stalker”.
Initially, things didn’t go smoothly, but it has since undergone multiple substantial updates. Nevertheless, GSC Game World’s Maxim Krippa is optimistic about the future, hinting in an interview with Forbes Ukraine (via Polygon) that Stalker 2 might be adapted into a Netflix series.
Krippa shared with Forbes his hope to secure a series for Stalker on Netflix, as some talks are ongoing but not finalized yet. Given the lasting fascination with post-apocalyptic stories, particularly the acclaimed HBO series Chernobyl, it appears that Stalker 2’s themes could be appealing to streaming services. According to ITC.ua’s translation of the interview, Krippa is inspired by CD Projekt RED’s promotional approach and the massive success they achieved with The Witcher, suggesting that Krippa aims to make Stalker a Ukrainian equivalent of The Witcher.
Krippa further emphasized that Stalker 2 will incorporate multiplayer functionality and feature two expansions. These add-ons are included in the Stalker 2 Season Pass, which comes with the Ultimate Edition of the game on Game Pass. It was previously announced that the multiplayer component would include traditional PvP modes like deathmatch and team deathmatch. Regrettably, it seems that cooperative exploration of The Zone with a friend isn’t an option at this time; let’s keep our fingers crossed that modders will step in to provide that experience.
It’s wonderful to observe games such as Stalker continuing to prosper, including among elderly men in Japan. However, it’s evident that the developers have a substantial amount of work ahead in refining and updating the core game before they can focus on additional content. This doesn’t imply that they’re not putting in effort; quite the contrary, as I type this, they’ve just released patch 1.1, which includes over thousand bug fixes, arriving just in time for Christmas.
