MAPPA’s The Rose of Versailles is Coming to Netflix in April
Originally announced during celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the series in 2022, “The Rose of Versailles” was a project long in development. MAPPA wasn’t confirmed as the animation studio until July 2024. As anticipated, the film premiered in Japanese cinemas in January 2025. Despite MAPPA typically producing gruesome shonen hits like “Chainsaw Man,” “Jujutsu Kaisen,” and “Attack on Titan,” this project was a massive success, earning 108,158,300 yen at the Japanese box office, with even the original creator, Riyoko Ikeda, commending the adaptation for its adherence to the source material.
The Rose of Versailles debuts on April 30th, exclusively on Netflix. This series follows Oscar, Marie Antoinette, Fersen, and André, whose lives become intertwined in the tumultuous times of the French Revolution.

Affirming that “The Rose of Versailles” is a groundbreaking piece in its genre might fall short of expressing the profound impact this series has had on shojo manga. The forthcoming film adaptation by MAPPA serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of the series, which still manages to captivate fans five decades after its creation. It’s fortunate that Netflix is making it easier for more people to experience this classic anime masterpiece and expand their library with a timeless addition.
Netflix describes the plot of The Rose of Versailles as:
In this historical setting of late 18th-century Versailles, France, we meet Oscar François de Jarjayes – a woman disguised as a man, brought up under the tutelage of a respected general. Simultaneously, Marie Antoinette, a noble and elegant queen, comes from Austria to be married. Oscar’s servant and lifelong friend, André Grandier, also resides here. Additionally, Hans Axel von Fersen, a dashing Swedish count, is part of this intriguing ensemble. Amidst the opulence of their era, they each navigate their destinies with poise and elegance, even as they are carried along by the tides of their time.
