Netflix Brings Sanrio’s Cutest Duo Alive in New Series Teaser

For a while now, Sanrio has been experimenting with the anime world, and series such as “Aggretsuko” and “Rilakkuma & Kaoru” have gained immense popularity among fans, both old and new, who love Sanrio’s beloved mascot characters. Now, this innovative company is embarking on a fresh anime venture, planning to bring to life the ups and downs of one of their most famous pairs – the cheerful, pastel pink-adorned My Melody and the mischievous Kuromi, known for their playfully dark personalities.

From my vantage point, I’ve learned that the upcoming anime series “My Melody & Kuromi,” as announced on Netflix‘s official YouTube channel, will feature a charming stop-motion style. This unique aesthetic brings the characters’ doll-like appearances to life, enhancing the show’s visual appeal. Details about the narrative format, whether it will be serialized or episodic, are scarce at this moment. However, a brief teaser description hints at some intrigue: “In July 2025, cherished Sanrio characters spring to life in the stop-motion series ‘My Melody & Kuromi,’ marking the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi! The series is helmed by director Tomoki Misato, writer Shuko Nemoto, and producer TORUKU from WIT [Studio].” The show will debut on Netflix in July 2025.

Though Dwarf Studio won’t collaborate with Sanrio in the future, renowned animation powerhouse WIT Studio has made a name for itself by creating beloved series such as “Spy x Family,” “Vinland Saga” (Season 1), and all four seasons of “Attack on Titan.” WIT Studio consistently demonstrates versatility while maintaining top-notch quality in all their projects.

The My Melody & Kuromi Anime Proves the Two Characters Are Better Together

The newly announced anime collaboration between Netflix and Sanrio couldn’t be more timely, as both Kuromi and My Melody celebrate significant milestones in 2025 – Kuromi marks her 20th anniversary, while My Melody turns 50. Despite Kuromi being thirty years younger than her punky companion, they have shared the limelight extensively in merchandise and artwork since their debut. Initially appearing as a more villainous counterpart to My Melody in the anime series Onegai My Melody, which premiered in 2005, Kuromi soon shed her “evil twin” image. Today, she is portrayed as a trickster, sporting a black and pink jester hat, but has formed an unbreakable bond with Melody, who is now her best friend.

Will it be intriguing to discover whether the forthcoming Netflix series, My Melody & Kuromi, intends to incorporate references to their original storyline as adversaries or if they’ll continue where most Sanrio fans perceive them as friends? The preview trailer doesn’t reveal much, but it does depict Kuromi displaying one of her signature grumpy faces, suggesting that she could potentially rekindle a rivalry with the beloved rabbit character.
