As a long-time fan of the Forman family saga, it’s disheartening to see That ’90s Show come to an end on Netflix. I’ve grown up with these characters, from the rebellious 70s to the grunge-filled 90s, and now watching Leia navigate her teenage years in Point Place. The show had a unique charm that transported us back to the nostalgic days of flannel shirts, dial-up internet, and MTV Unplugged.
The third season of “That ’90s Show” won’t be available on Netflix anymore, as the streaming service decided to terminate the spinoff of “That ’70s Show.” Fans of “That ’70s Show” were thrilled when they learned that some original cast members would reprise their roles in the Netflix series set two decades later. The main characters of “That ’90s Show” were Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, who portrayed Red and Kitty Forman. Other familiar faces from “That ’70s Show,” including Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Wilmer Valderrama, made guest appearances in the series. Unfortunately, despite these star-studded appearances, the viewership for “That ’90s Show” during its second season wasn’t enough to prevent it from being canceled by Netflix.
Kurtwood Smith shared on Instagram that the speculations about the cancellation of That ’90s Show are true. In his post, he acknowledged fans’ curiosity about Season 3 but sadly announced that Netflix will not be renewing the show. He expressed gratitude to the supporters who watched and appreciated the series, sharing heartfelt encounters with them during travels and interactions through social media. Smith also praised the heart behind the project and the talented cast, writers, directors, producers, and crew he had the pleasure of working with in bringing Grandpa Red to life.
After expressing gratitude to the dedicated fans of both “That ’90s Show” and “That ’70s Show”, Smith hinted at trying to find another platform for the series, emulating Red Forman’s spirit. He said, “We appreciate letting Red, Kitty, their grandkid, all their friends, neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show, and our fabulous guest stars keep you entertained for two seasons. Why was That ’90s Show canceled by Netflix?
Netflix doesn’t usually explain why it decides to end shows, but we can speculate based on the streaming numbers of ‘That ’90s Show’. The series returned for Season 2 on June 27th, attracting approximately 1.8 million views in its initial week. Surprisingly, this was the only week ‘That ’90s Show’ Part 2 appeared on Netflix’s Top 10 list. Subsequently, Netflix advanced the premiere of ‘That ’90s Show’ Part 3 from October 24th to August 22nd, but viewership remained low. The opening weekend drew less than 1.9 million views, with the first full week under 1.6 million views and Week 2 under 1.4 million views.
It appears the cancellation of That ’90s Show Season 3 might be final, considering most Netflix original series don’t move to another streaming platform after they’ve been terminated, and need to secure a new broadcast network instead. The exception to this rule is Netflix’s revival of One Day At A Time.
What is That ’90s Show about?
1996 finds Leia Forman back in Point Place for another summer filled with laughter and camaraderie alongside her friends and grandparents, Kitty and Red. The narrative resumes in the Forman household kitchen, as Red and Kitty arrive home from Paris only to discover an enormous hole in the wall. Yet, this incident is merely a hint of the bigger challenges Leia must confront. New connections are forged, existing ones deepen. Friendships are strained, only to be strengthened again, just when everything appears to be going smoothly, a figure from the past reappears, threatening to disrupt the harmony once more. As the school break nears its end, the group is forced to grapple with Leia’s impending departure, but this time she’s determined not to go without putting up a struggle.
