Netflix CEOs Sound Off on Where Streamer Will Use Generative AI

As a devoted fan of Netflix and someone who has witnessed the revolutionary impact it has had on the entertainment industry, I am both intrigued and excited about the potential use of generative AI technology in the platform’s recommendation system. The recent comments from Netflix CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos during their quarterly Q&A have fueled my curiosity even further.

In recent times, the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in entertainment has become a topic of much discussion. Most recently, Netflix leaders Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos have shared their perspectives on how Netflix intends to employ generative AI technology. During a recent earnings call, they mentioned that AI is already being utilized in Netflix’s content suggestions, but they cautioned that they need to observe the advancements in AI use before making definitive statements about its future role.

“For quite some time now, we’ve employed AI and machine learning technologies, which are similar in nature, to enhance the discovery process and boost user engagement by means of these enhancements. We’re convinced that generative AI has a significant role to play in refining our recommendations within discovery systems. Our ultimate goal is to make it effortless for individuals to unearth a captivating story tailored to their preferences at any given moment. However, let me emphasize that the foundation of our achievements hinges on top-notch content and an unwavering commitment to enhancing our recommendation system.”

Sarandos expressed his enthusiasm for the role of AI in entertainment, viewing it as a valuable resource but acknowledging the importance of observing its progress before determining its future applications.

“Sarandos expressed thoughts on how AI will influence creators in the future, acknowledging the uncertainty but believing that AI will provide innovative tools for storytelling. He pointed out the historical correlation between technological advancements and successful entertainment businesses, citing animation as an example. With animation becoming cheaper due to technology advances, more people are employed in this field than ever before. Sarandos is confident that AI will make production 50% cheaper. He emphasized that stories win over audiences when they connect emotionally through writing, acting chemistry, plot twists, and surprises. While audiences might notice other aspects, they primarily focus on the connection with the story.”

Based on my experience as a film industry professional, I firmly believe that the human connection is the cornerstone of any successful storytelling endeavor. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) in filmmaking, there’s an exciting buzz in the industry about its potential use as a tool. I’ve seen firsthand how some filmmakers and producers are experimenting with AI, and they’re genuinely thrilled by the possibilities it brings.
