Netflix Hit With Lawsuit Over “Unwatchable” Paul vs. Tyson Fight

As a seasoned gamer and long-time Netflix subscriber, I must admit that last week’s Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson livestream debacle left me more than a little frustrated. Having experienced numerous gaming sessions where lag and technical issues have spoiled the fun, this situation felt all too familiar.

Last week’s Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson livestream encounter didn’t quite go smoothly for Netflix, and they’re now facing a lawsuit instead. A Florida resident has filed a lawsuit in the Florida state court on behalf of viewers who experienced difficulties watching the fight, arguing that Netflix was not adequately prepared for the massive global audience. The lawsuit alleges that the streaming issues during the event amounted to a breach of contract by Netflix and deceptive trade practices under Florida law.

The issue with Netflix streaming was significant, and given that such problems have occurred previously, users might have been more prepared,” the criticism suggests in part.

The complaint continued, “Instead of providing the programming its viewers pay for every month, Netflix was completely unprepared and unable to fix the issues.” The complaint also noted that Netflix “continued billing for services not delivered” (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The highly anticipated match between Paul and Tyson, scheduled for November 17th, was expected to be a major live spectacle on Netflix. In fact, Netflix later revealed that this fight attracted an astounding average audience of 108 million viewers during each minute, making it the most-watched global sporting event streamed online to date. However, trouble arose as users started experiencing streaming issues. Numerous people turned to social media to express their frustration about constant buffering and frozen streams, which occurred even before the main event began. Despite these problems, some viewers voiced their dissatisfaction so strongly that they called for canceling Netflix over this issue.

Previously, similar technical troubles have affected Netflix’s live streaming events. For instance, during the Love Is Blind reunion special in April 2023, technical issues arose, causing the event to be delayed by nearly 24 hours and eventually provided as a recorded event instead of the promised live show. Despite this hiccup, Netflix didn’t provide much detail on what caused the problem but expressed hope that future broadcasts would run more smoothly. In the case of the Paul vs. Tyson fight, Netflix stated their readiness for the event and assured that their servers could handle traffic.

It turned out differently from what was expected for the fight between Paul and Tyson. Regarding the fight, some spectators persevered and managed to catch the main event where Paul knocked out Tyson in eight rounds via unanimous decision. However, regarding the lawsuit, Netflix has yet to respond, as reported at the time this article was published.
