Netflix Locks Down Its Next Live-Action Manga Adaptation (& It’s Coming Soon)

As a long-time fan of manga and anime, I must say that Netflix‘s upcoming live-action adaptation of 10DANCE has me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up reading shonen epics like One Piece, it’s heartening to see such a beloved yaoi series get the live-action treatment. Keishi Otomo, who has previously worked on Ruroni Kenshin and March Comes In Like a Lion, is the perfect choice to direct this project.

In recent years, there’s been a significant improvement in the quality of live-action adaptations of anime and manga series, with Netflix leading the charge. Their live-action version of Eiichiro Oda’s shonen epic One Piece has been well-received by fans worldwide for its faithful adaptation of the original manga’s characters and setting. Now, Netflix is set to adapt another manga series, this time focusing on a yaoi genre.

On November 25, 2024, Netflix officially announced via a tweet that they would be releasing a live-action adaptation of Inouesatoh’s 10DANCE in 2025. This upcoming movie will be helmed by Keishi Otomo, who has previously directed live-action adaptations of Ruroni Kenshin and March Comes In Like a Lion. In the film, Ryoma Takeuchi (Roppongi Class) and Keita Machida (Yu Yu Hakusho) will star. While an exact release date hasn’t been set yet, fans are already eagerly awaiting its premiere.

10DANCE Is a Genre Defining Yaoi Series Overflowing With Passion

10DANCE is an engrossing romance manga for fans who enjoy watching enemies turn into lovers gradually. On their website, Kodansha, the publishing company, describes the series as a “scorching gay ballroom romance,” where the two “kings of the ballroom” engage in intense rivalry while building a passionate bond. The story revolves around Shinya Sugiki, an accomplished ballroom dancer, and Shinya Suzuki, the reigning king of Latin dance. Interestingly, they share not only their names but also a deep-seated passion for the art and sportsmanship in professional dancing. Given their competitive nature, both aim to win the 10-Dance Competition, which necessitates learning each other’s unique skills.

In 2025, Netflix will premiere a movie titled “10DANCE,” which is based on a popular manga series. The story follows the journey of two fierce dance competitors who, despite their initial rivalry, eventually form an unexpected bond in the high-stakes world of competitive dance. Directed by Keishi Otomo and featuring Ryoma Takeuchi (known for his roles in “Roppongi Class” and “Black Pean”) and Keita Machida, this film promises an exhilarating exploration of dance and human connection.

Absolutely, Shinya 1 and Shinyy 2 have a longstanding rivalry that transcends friendship but falls short of enmity. This complex relationship unfolds in a partnership that becomes increasingly intricate as time passes. The story primarily revolves around the blossoming romance between these rivals, yet it also delves into the rich culture of dancing, making it more than just a romantic tale. The manga offers fascinating insights and references to real-life dance, even for those who may not initially find professional dancing captivating. Inouesatoh’s stunning artwork adds depth to every scene, making each moment significant. Given its potential, 10DANCE seems an ideal choice for a live-action adaptation and could potentially become Netflix’s next major success. With the manga being widely popular, fans are eagerly awaiting news about the official release date of 10DANCE.
