Adapting anime into live-action has often been met with skepticism by both fans and critics due to the unique elements that are challenging to translate from animation, such as its exaggerated storylines and costume designs. For instance, how does one capture the emotional depth portrayed in anime like “Fullmetal Alchemist” when using live-action or drawing? However, Netflix has shown success in this area, offering a well-received live-action version of the popular anime “One Piece”. Building on its momentum, Netflix is adding another live-action adaptation to its catalog – a series based on “Golden Kamuy”, set to premiere on February 6.
According to Anime News Network, the anime series “Golden Kamuy: The Hokkaido Prisoner Hunt” is now available on Netflix. This show is an extension of the popular manga “Golden Kamuy” and serves as a continuation of the 2024 live-action movie adaptation. The film was a massive hit in Japan, selling over 356,000 tickets during its opening weekend, grossing approximately $3.69 million. Netflix premiered the “Golden Kamuy” film on their streaming platform on May 19th, 2024. The live-action adaptation has been well-received by fans for its authentic costumes and standout performances. Notably, the cast and crew from the movie will reprise their roles in the TV series, with Kento Yamazaki and Anna Yamada playing the lead characters. A sequel film is also planned to follow the storyline of the TV series.
Why Netflix Is Pushing Live-Action Anime
In a departure from its initial steps, Netflix isn’t new to bringing popular anime to life through live-action. The streaming giant has been actively involved in live-action anime for quite some time now, pouring millions of dollars into acquiring distribution rights for Japanese adaptations and even producing their own live-action anime series. This venture led Netflix to create the controversial “Cowboy Bebop” live-action series featuring John Cho, which faced numerous production issues and was terminated after just one season. Additionally, Netflix played a part in the release of the debated live-action “Death Note” film in 2017, with plans for a sequel show. Among the few successful instances is the popular “One Piece” live-action series, which promptly secured a second season.
For years, anime has played a significant role in Netflix’s strategy, being one of the most favored genres on their streaming platform since its launch. Even though Netflix had an advantage in distributing anime, other companies are now jumping into the bandwagon. The year 2025 is predicted to be a boom period for anime, with major players like Sony pouring more resources into this medium, aiming to satisfy the ever-expanding fanbase of anime. Acquiring overseas streaming rights for the live-action series of “Golden Kamuy” is just one of Netflix’s many moves to establish itself firmly in the global anime market.
