As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when it comes to Netflix’s decision regarding Voltron: Legendary Defender. This show was more than just an animated series; it was a symbol of hope and camaraderie in a world that often feels devoid of both.
Netflix has significantly invested in both animated series and anime, as demonstrated at the recent Netflix Geeked Week event where they unveiled numerous upcoming animated projects. Highlights included presentations for “Devil May Cry,” “Magic The Gathering,” “Sakamoto Days,” “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” “Cyberpunk 2077,” “Castlevania Nocturne,” and “Arcane.” Additionally, live-action adaptations for “One Piece” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender” were showcased. However, even with this emphasis on animation, one of Netflix’s major original anime productions is still at risk of being canceled.
As a loyal Netflix fan, I can’t help but marvel at the remarkable strides they’ve made in the animated world. From groundbreaking series like Bojack Horseman, Love, Death & Robots, Big Mouth, The Dragon Prince to the Academy Award-winning film Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, Netflix has truly established itself as a go-to destination for animation enthusiasts. However, even with such an impressive lineup, it seems that saving Voltron: Legendary Defender might prove challenging.
Voltron: Legendary Defender Might Be Leaving Netflix
According to What’s On Netflix, the popular animated series “Voltron: Legendary Defender” is set to depart from Netflix on December 7th this year. This series, which made its debut on the streaming platform in 2016, spanned an impressive eight seasons and chronicled the battles of mech pilots against alien invasions. Despite numerous fan-led campaigns advocating for a ninth season, there’s a possibility that these fans may be disheartened if this news becomes official.
It’s often assumed that since Netflix controls the rights to “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” other platforms wouldn’t be involved in its production. However, this assumption is misleading because Netflix partnered with DreamWorks Animation on this project. This partnership suggests that there could be a shift in the series, implying that the animated series might transition to another platform. Produced by Studio Mir (known for “The Legend of Korra,” “My Adventures With Superman,” and upcoming “Devil May Cry”), the collaboration hints at possible expiration of rights this year. As of now, there’s no news on where “Voltron: Legendary Defender” might move if it gets removed from Netflix.
Voltron’s Future
If the news about Voltron: Legendary Defender ending is accurate, it doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see the robotic lions again. Reports indicate that Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit a live-action reboot of the series, with creator Rawson Marshall Thurber (known for Red Notice and Central Intelligence) set to co-write the script alongside Ellen Shanman. David Hoberman, Todd Lierberman, and Bob Koplar are expected to produce this project. Given the success of live-action anime adaptations in recent times, it’s not surprising that Amazon MGM is jumping on this trend.
If you’re interested in re-experiencing the series that sparked it all, the 1980s classic “Voltron” can be streamed on Crunchyroll. Although the animation may seem different compared to what Studio Mir created, the story of “Voltron” has left a lasting impact on anime enthusiasts throughout the years.
