Being a person of color, I’ve often yearned for characters and stories that resonate with my own experiences, and “Supacell” seems to be striking a chord with many like me.
The popular TV series “Supacell” by Rapman is returning for its second season on Netflix! This time around, we follow a fresh group of youngsters in South London who possess extraordinary abilities due to their super powers. For those not in the know, “Supacell” revolves around a tight-knit group of five individuals bound together by sickle cell disease and their families. As fate would have it, they all discover they have unique powers, catching the attention of a clandestine organization intent on controlling them for malicious purposes. Netflix has been quite pleased with its success so far. In an era where superhero stories are often under scrutiny, here’s another instance of the genre thriving on a platform by offering a fresh perspective on a well-worn narrative.
It’s worth noting that the prosperity of “Supacell” has had a positive impact on the United Kingdom. Lately, there have been some fluctuations in the region’s Netflix exports, but this particular superhero series has managed to make a significant impact on their Global Top 10 list. The series is helmed by Sebastian Thiel and boasts the acting prowess of the Supacell Six, an ensemble cast consisting of Tosin Cole, Ricardo McCleary-Campbell, Jessica Magaye, Saraphina Mattis, Melissa Simon-Hartman, Michael Ademilua, and Cleo Young.

He remarked, “It’s similar to saying, ‘You appreciate Succession,’ but could you see yourself reflected in Succession? Probably not.”
As a passionate advocate, I echo Cole’s sentiments when he suggests that our journey towards societal equality is far from over. Even this very discussion we’re having now underscores the necessity for dialogue about representation, indicating that we still have miles to go before we can truly say we’ve come a long way. It’s only when shows are created without racial or ethnic labels, where they’re just shows and not Black, White, or Asian, that we can truly claim everything is normal.
