In April 10th, 2025, Netflix’s eagerly awaited sci-fi anime production by WIT Studio, titled “Moonrise,” will officially debut. At AnimeJapan 2025, one of the most significant annual anime gatherings, updates about “Moonrise” were revealed. Notable anime studios and producers showcased their upcoming series during the two-day event, with Netflix among them, presenting fresh previews for several series, including “Moonrise.” The acclaimed director Masashi Koizuka, who previously worked on “Attack on Titan” Seasons 2 and 3, is directing this anime while also contributing to the remake of “One Piece,” which was announced at Jump Festa 2024.
Initially slated for release in 2024, the original series titled “Moonrise,” penned by Tou Ubukata (known for works like “Tenchi Meisatsu” and scriptwriting for “Fafner in the Azure” and “Psycho-Pass”), has been postponed due to production hurdles. Recently, a fresh trailer for “Moonrise” has surfaced, revealing that AiNA THE END will be singing the theme song “Daijobu.” Notably, she has previously performed the first ending theme of “The Apothecary Diaries” and theme songs for the “Mononoke” movies. Furthermore, a new key visual for the anime has been unveiled, showcasing protagonist Jacob Shadow along with his friend Phil Ashe.
What Is the Plot of Moonrise?
In the upcoming anime Moonrise, we find ourselves in a future not too far off where humanity has set up a global government that’s more of a loose arrangement overseen by an advanced AI system known as Sapientia. This AI is behind the “Moon Development Project,” which essentially dumps pollutants and criminals on the moon, condemning them to live in squalor. The story revolves around Jacob Shadow, who gets caught up in a terrorist bombing and subsequently loses everything he cherishes. His family ends up being captured by the rebel army on the moon, who aim to free them from Earth’s grasp and fight for their liberation.
Jack, with a thirst for vengeance, signs up for Earth’s military as a lunar scout. But as events unfold, he encounters an unexpected adversary leading the rebellion, causing him to doubt everything he thought he knew. In the anime adaptation, Chiaki Koboyashiki, known for voicing Gabimaru in “Hell Paradise” and Mash in “Mashle”, will voice Jacob. Meanwhile, Yūto Uemura, famous for his roles as Atsushi Nakajima in “Bungo Stray Dogs” and Thorfinn in “Vinland Saga”, will lend his talents to the character Phil. The rest of the cast and crew details are still under wraps.
