For quite some time, Netflix has played a significant role in the anime world, both by showcasing established series and producing its own original content. In the upcoming month of March, Netflix plans to expand its anime library by adding a spin-off series from an anime franchise that’s seen surprising success. This particular battle, which unfolds within our bodies, is gearing up to bring its darker spin-off to Netflix. Although the main storyline may have concluded, this popular franchise continues to capture public attention in creative ways.
The popular manga series Cells At Work, created by Akane Shimizu, made its debut on the big screen with a live-action movie from Warner Bros. Japan this year. Although the original manga concluded in 2021, it has continued to thrive through its spin-offs. One such spin-off, titled Cells At Work: Code Black, focuses on a teenager’s story who doesn’t always prioritize taking care of his body. Although not penned by Shimizu, the story written by Shigemitsu Harada and Issei Hatsuyoshiya tackles real-world issues like smoking, excessive drinking, and sexually transmitted infections.
Cells At Work: Code Black Hits Netflix Soon
If you’re eager to delve deeper into the intriguing realm of this distinctive anime series, “Cells At Work: Code Black” will debut on Netflix starting March 1st. Fortunately, the original series can be found streaming on Netflix now, so if you need to catch up, you have a few days left. Additionally, alongside its upcoming Netflix release, the show is also available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The spin-off comes with an official description that goes like this:
A newly hired Red Blood Cell has been rushing around, hastily delivering oxygen throughout the entire body! However, it’s now clear that this workplace is on the verge of a Code Black emergency!! Alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, lack of sleep… Surviving in conditions not unlike a harsh corporate environment, one can only imagine what thoughts might cross the minds of these overworked cells at the end of their long day. This story takes you inside your very own body…
Cells At Work’s Future
Although the live-action movie has been successful in Japan, there’s no word yet on when or if it will be released in North America. Given Warner Bros Japan’s recent efforts in adapting popular anime series like Tokyo Revengers, Rurouni Kenshin, and Death Note, it seems they recognize the potential of venturing deeply into the anime world. One Piece serves as an example of a successful live-action adaptation made in America, with Gundam planning a similar venture in the future. If a Western version of Cells At Work ever emerges, it would join a group of well-regarded adaptations.
