I’ve just witnessed the premiere of Netflix’s exclusive anime production, titled Moonrise, from the acclaimed studio WIT Studio. The series is helmed by director Masashi Koizuka, who has previously worked on seasons 2 and 3 of Attack on Titan and is currently involved in the remake of One Piece. After an unexpected postponement, pushing the release date from 2024 to 2025, the first 18 episodes of this captivating and visually astounding sci-fi anime commenced streaming on April 10th. The narrative is penned by Tou Ubukata, renowned for his work on Tenchi Meisatsu and as a series composer/scriptwriter for Fafner in the Azure and Psycho-Pass. The story unfolds in a future where Earth and the Moon are locked in tense political and military struggles. A somewhat disorganized world government, governed by an intelligent AI network called Sapientia, is pushing forward with the “Moon Development Project.
The story sends pollutants and criminals to live on the moon in poverty. One unfortunate event entangles our hero, Jacob Shadow, in a terrorist bombing that takes away everything he cherishes. With his family captured, he joins the army to fight rebels on the lunar surface, but finds himself at odds with someone from his past. It’s yet unknown if the studio will produce a second season for this new anime. In a recent chat about an upcoming anime, WIT Studio’s president, George Wada, mentioned Star Wars, a renowned science fiction franchise.
WIT Studio’s President Brought Up Star Wars When Discussing an Original Project
Moonrise is an expansive series of 18 episodes, which took six years to conceptualize and bring to life, with filming commencing in 2021. Each scene offers a breathtaking visual journey that transports us to different realms.
During an interview with Animeanime, director Masashi Koizuka revealed the origins of the project: “WIT STUDIO’s president, Wada, is known for asking team members about their desired projects. So, when I expressed my interest in the Star Wars series that had recently been released and commented on its appeal, Wada later approached me with the suggestion, ‘Would you like to attempt creating a space opera?’
Koizuka continued by stating, “Wada had previously collaborated with Ubukata-san on projects like ‘PSYCHO-PASS’ and ‘Le Chevalier D’Eon’. He connected us, which kick-started the project. I believe this was during his tenure as director for the second season of ‘Attack on Titan’. It’s been quite a while since the concept originated.
Although there’s no connection or influence from the iconic “Star Wars” franchise, the concept for “Moonrise” was conceived following its unveiling. Spanning nearly five decades, “Star Wars” continues to captivate fans globally with numerous spin-offs and series still being produced today. This upcoming anime aims to offer a soap opera experience tailored for the shonen audience, deviating from traditional seinen titles like “Ghost in the Shell” and “PSYCHO-PASS”.
During the interview, Koizuka disclosed plenty of intriguing details about his upcoming series that’s definitely worth diving deeper into. He also revealed the challenges they faced in turning Moonrise into a TV anime, which eventually led Netflix to offer collaboration. This is consistent with their strategy of assuming significant risks as they broaden their international content offerings, much like they did with Squid Game.
