One of the top romance series from Weekly Shonen Jump, “Blue Box“, concluded its first anime season, and unsurprisingly, a second season is already being produced. On March 27th, an intriguing promotional trailer was unveiled, reminding viewers of some of Season 1’s most thrilling moments before subtly revealing that Season 2 is indeed on the way. Given that the finale left many devoted Hina fans in tears, it’s great news!
Title character, Taiki Inomata, a regular high school student who plays badminton, finds himself in an unusual situation as his school’s gym is also used by the star girls’ basketball team, led by the captivating upperclassman, Chinatsu Kano. Although his sports abilities are considered average among his peers, he secretly harbors a deep crush on Chinatsu. However, their contrasting social standings make it difficult for him to approach her. In an unexpected turn of events reminiscent of romantic comedies, Chinatsu’s family relocates overseas for work. Coincidentally, Taiki’s family are long-time acquaintances of the Kano family, and as a result, Chinatsu moves in with him, offering Taiki an unexpected chance to get closer to his crush.
Blue Box Takes a Common Premise & Makes Something Truly Unique
Without a doubt, the premise of “Blue Box” isn’t entirely novel. There are numerous romance series across various demographics featuring the “crush-turned-roommate” trope. However, what sets “Blue Box” apart is its exceptional storytelling and character development. Instead of following the path of a simple romantic comedy, it delves deep into emotional drama, skillfully portraying the complexities of young love.
The series not only revolves around Taiki but also provides insightful perspectives from Chinatsu and Hina, his two female leads. Despite Taiki’s typical shonen protagonist traits – awkward yet adorable – he stands out with his devotion and honesty, making him a captivating character as he grapples with his growing feelings for Chinatsu that seem one-sided.
“Blue Box” may share similarities with other romance series, but its unique approach to storytelling and character development makes it stand out. Instead of being a typical romantic comedy, it becomes an intense drama about young love, and Taiki, the protagonist, is more than just awkwardly cute – he’s devoted and honest, which adds depth to his struggle with his feelings for Chinatsu.
In one corner, viewers witness the point of view of Taiki’s close friend, Hina – an exceptionally gifted gymnast who harbors deeper feelings for Taiki than just a classmate. At first, Hina remains unaware of these emotions, even pushing Taiki towards Chinatsu romantically. However, as the series progresses, she comes to regret her attempts to pair them up. What sets Blue Box apart from many similar shows is its nuanced handling of the love triangle. Rather than exploiting this dynamic, the storyline focuses on Taiki’s steadfast commitment to Chinatsu while grappling with the delicate task of gently rejecting Hina without compromising their friendship. Blue Box is a masterfully crafted series, and its anime adaptation has more than met the expectations of manga fans.
