The Devil May Cry video game series, produced by Capcom, focuses on the story of a character named Dante, who is a demon hunter. His mission is to eradicate all demons from Earth. This game series, initially developed by Hideki Kamiya and Capcom in 2001, has seen its fanbase expand over time with numerous sequels released, the latest one being Devil May Cry 5 in 2019.
Previously, the franchise had a 12-episode animated series in 2007 made by Madhouse that took place somewhere between the first two games. However, the new adaptation isn’t a retelling or reimagining of that series. Instead, it’s an entirely fresh take on the story. The upcoming 8-episode series, produced by Studio Mir and created by Adi Shankar, will launch on Netflix on April 3rd.
A Tale Just as Hardcore as Its Rockin’ Debut
In the style of Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy,” the storyline revolves around the concept of what happens to a soul after death, offering a depiction of divine justice through either punishment or reward. On this spiritual journey, Dante is guided by figures such as Virgil, traversing from the tormented realms of Hell to penitence in Purgatory and ultimately reaching Heaven.
According to IMDb’s summary for the 2025 animated series, “A captivating demon hunter, who is half-demon himself, could be the world’s savior as a sinister villain plans to unleash Hell upon Earth.” In this narrative, Dante finds himself caught up in the struggle between the human and demon realms due to the impending danger of portals opening between the two. The series, focusing on Dante’s origin story, may draw inspiration from the third installment of the video game.

Devil May Cry x Evanescence Collab
The iconic video game series “Devil May Cry” and the hauntingly nostalgic gothic alternative tunes of Evanescence create an unforgettable pairing as Netflix releases a music video to herald the launch of the new “Devil May Cry” animated series. The song “Afterlife,” penned by Amy Lee herself, produced by Mako (Alex Seaver) and Nick Raskulinecz, lives up to its name with lyrics that match the fierce animation, effectively building anticipation for the eagerly awaited show. This praise comes directly from showrunner and executive producer Shankar himself.
According to Billboard, the show’s producer Shankar characterizes the series as a “melancholic rock & roll Shakespearean tragedy – an operatic ballet involving destiny, loss, and unyielding quest for redemption”. Amy Lee, initially unfamiliar with Devil May Cry, later grew fond of the series, expressing her affection by saying, “I am absolutely captivated by the show, its artistry, and narrative… I’ve always admired great anime. From the very first scene of the show, I knew it was promising. It’s creative, thought-provoking, terrifying yet beautiful, timeless.
“Regarding the song, it embodies both my suffering and my determination,” expressed Lee. “Being someone who has endured great loss, forever bearing the scars of that, but also someone who has moved beyond fear. No more apprehension or hesitation in your pursuit when you’ve fully committed to the battle and have nothing left to lose.” Shanker described their sound as “alchemy – a blend of gothic majesty and raw emotionality, a harmonious fusion of epic and anthemic… The way Amy Lee’s voice encapsulates pain, strength, and transcendence in a single note is precisely what Devil May Cry required.
