A “Dungeons & Dragons” live-action TV show, titled “The Forgotten Realms,” is currently being developed at Netflix. Shawn Levy and Drew Crevello are respectively the producer and writer/showrunner for this project. As per Deadline’s report, the series will take place in the most famous fantasy world of the tabletop RPG, which opens up possibilities for familiar characters like Drizz’t Do’Urden to appear. The story, however, is unconnected to the 2023 film “Honor Among Thieves.” Hasbro Entertainment is involved in the project, but none of the companies have yet made any official statements regarding this news.
For several years, there’s been talk about a potential “Dungeons & Dragons” TV series, and now, with the right team in place, it seems this version might finally come to fruition. Crevello, creator of the Apple TV+ miniseries “WeCrashed,” was previously attached to a different series for Paramount+ that didn’t happen in 2023. On the other hand, Levy has a strong track record at Netflix with “Stranger Things,” which has contributed to the recent surge in popularity of “D&D.” Unlike previous attempts when eOne, the former subsidiary, was involved, this series benefits from the support of Hasbro Entertainment.
In reports, it’s said that “The Forgotten Realms” already has a pilot script from Crevello. If it gets greenlit for a series, Crevello would be an executive producer, along with Levy and Dan Levine of Levy’s company 21 Laps. This company has a partnership with Netflix. Recently, Levy was involved in the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine”, and he is currently an executive producer for “Stranger Things”, which will be airing its final season this year.
Netflix has seen significant triumphs in the fantasy genre through series such as “The Witcher” and “Shadow & Bone”, but none of their brands hold a candle to “Dungeons & Dragons”. It’s been suggested that if “The Forgotten Realms” proves popular, Netflix aims to grow the franchise and potentially create an intricately connected cinematic universe.
The Forgotten Realms is a fantasy universe frequently utilized across various Dungeons & Dragons games, books, and other forms of media. This realm shares similarities with medieval fantasies such as J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, boasting the presence of elves, dwarves, orcs, and other mythical beings coexisting alongside humans. Furthermore, it serves as the backdrop for popular video games like Baldur’s Gate 3, which was launched in 2023.
The world of “The Forgotten Realms” is currently under construction, meaning that its completion isn’t guaranteed yet, and we don’t have a specific release date in sight. In the meantime, you can enjoy streaming “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” on Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+.
