Netflix’s Exciting ’90s Anime Remake: What You Need to Know!

Over the past few years, Netflix has significantly strengthened its position as a dominant force in bringing fresh anime content to Western viewers. They’ve secured rights to popular Weekly Shonen Jump adaptations like “Dandadan” and “Sakamoto Days”, but what’s more exciting is their recent acquisition of the streaming rights for a highly anticipated remake of an 80s shonen manga, which WIT Studio – known for creating “Attack on Titan” and “Spy x Family” – is producing.

The action-packed anime series titled “Yaiba: Samurai Legend” is ready to stream on Netflix in North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand starting from April. This exciting addition will be part of the already vibrant Spring 2025 anime season. For viewers in the U.S., the series can also be found on Hulu. According to Netflix, “Yaiba” tells the story of a young swordsman named Yaiba Kurogane who crosses paths with kendo expert Takeshi Onimaru. As their rivalry unfolds, an ancient power threatens Japan, compelling Yaiba to confront it directly.

Yaiba Is an Influential Shonen Franchise That Every Anime Fan Should Experience

Hailing from the renowned creator Gosho Aoyama, who brought us Detective Conan, Yaiba stands out as a unique battle shonen series. Initially published from 1988 to 1993 in Weekly Shonen Sunday, it embodies the timeless coolness of shows from this era. Judging by the teasers and promos released by WIT Studio for the 2025 reboot, it appears they aim to revitalize the original content while appealing to a fresh group of anime enthusiasts. The initial anime adaptation, produced by Studio Pastel in 1993, ran for 53 episodes until its conclusion in 1994. With such an extensive history and high expectations, WIT Studio has some big shoes to fill, but considering their past accomplishments, they’re well-positioned to enhance the original work.

Beyond the enticing animation previews for the upcoming series, what makes it particularly intriguing is that Gosho Aoyama himself is involved in its production, scheduled for 2025. This provides a unique chance for the story and characters to be influenced directly by the original creator. The series will be helmed by director Takahiro Hasui, who has an impressive resume, having worked as an episode director for shows like “Mob Psycho 100,” “My Hero Academia,” and “Blood Blockade Battlefront.” Notably, he’s also contributed to anime adaptations of Aoyama’s other works, including “Detective Conan,” where he served as the Assistant Director for “Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine,” released in 2023. The scriptwriting duties will be undertaken by Touko Machida, whose past projects include “Lucky Star” and numerous isekai series such as “7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!” (aired in 2024) and “Farming Life In Another World,” released in 2023.
