As a longtime fan who’s been following this rollercoaster ride since its initial announcement, I can’t help but feel a mix of exhilaration and cautious optimism upon seeing Netflix’s first look at Magic: The Gathering. It’s like watching my childhood favorite card game finally stepping onto the big screen, albeit with a few twists along the way.


During Netflix’s Geeked Week event, they unveiled sneak peeks for numerous projects, including one that many had thought would never come to fruition – Magic: The Gathering, originally announced in 2019 and plagued with delays since then. Today, Netflix has finally given us a first glimpse at the upcoming series. Although we only have one image to study for now, it’s an encouraging sign that production is nearing completion, which is fantastic news for fans of this beloved franchise.

The animated series, initially unveiled in June 2019, had The Russo Brothers signed up as Executive Producers at the outset. Later, a significant development came with Brandon Routh being cast as Gideon Jura, who was expected to play a significant role in the show. Details about the series were scarce until 2021 when The Russos decided to step away from the project.

Initially, Brandon Routh stated that the series was not in progress and had been terminated, providing no additional information. Today, however, the series appears to be thriving, which is a positive development. Here’s hoping it won’t take another few years for its release.
