Netflix's Monster Series Casts Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein for Season 3

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with a soft spot for true crime narratives, I must say I am both intrigued and slightly appalled by the casting of Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein in Netflix’s upcoming series, Monster: Ed Gein.

Actor Charlie Hunnam, known for roles in “Rebel Moon” and “Sons of Anarchy”, has agreed to take the lead in Netflix’s controversial true-crime series “Monster” for its third season. Hunnam will portray notorious serial killer Ed Gein, whose grotesque actions served as inspiration for several fictional characters such as Leatherface from “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and Norman Bates in “Psycho”. Gein maintained a strained and unhealthy relationship with his deeply religious mother, who instilled in him the belief that women and modern society were inherently corrupt. He lived with her until her death, and became increasingly fixated on her as time went on.

Last night, we learned about the latest cast announcements, happening right before the debut of the second season of Monster. This season primarily focuses on the tale of Lyle and Erik Menendez, which will be available on Netflix starting today. The initial report came from The Hollywood Reporter.

Throughout his lifetime, Gein was primarily convicted of two homicides, admitting guilt in both. However, he is strongly suspected of committing at least seven additional murders, and there are indications that he may also have been responsible for the death of his brother who passed away several years prior to when his criminal activities became known.

Ed Gein’s infamy primarily stemmed from the grotesque crime scene uncovered after authorities identified him as a danger: aside from the murders, it was discovered that Gein had exhumed bodies from at least nine graves and crafted morbid souvenirs using human skin and bones. Various household items such as lamps, bowls, belts, and masks were made from human facial skin found in his residence. The obsession with mothers and furniture crafted from human skin not only explains Gein’s influence on horror films but also clarifies how he fits into specific horror tropes.

As a dedicated Netflix enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Monster,” the series I’ve been hooked on, has been renewed for two more seasons! This decision came after the massive success of the season revolving around Richard Dahmer last year. Excitingly, the creative minds behind the show, Murphy and executive producer Ian Brennan, have chosen to delve into the sensational Menendez brothers case from the 1990s tabloids as their next venture. Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez will step into the roles of these notorious brothers who were convicted for the murder of their parents, Jose and Mary Louise Menendez. You might remember them from the recent docuseries on Peacock.

Currently, Hunnam stands as the sole actor linked to the project “Monster: Ed Gein“. No official start date for production has been announced at this time.
