Netflix’s My Melody & Kuromi Is Looking Adorable With First Preview

It’s no wonder that Netflix has been making significant strides in its anime offerings, and it was only a matter of time before they aimed to secure a license with a massive fanbase. They’ve already made headway by acquiring exclusive adaptations of popular manga and video games. However, what Netflix lacked was the powerful brand recognition associated with one of Sanrio’s famous mascot characters. While this new show doesn’t focus on the legendary Hello Kitty, it does center around a duo that is equally well-known among fans.

Previously, Netflix has explored creating animated shows based on Sanrio characters, such as “Rilakkuma & Kaoru.” However, their latest project focuses on the most famous pair from Sanrio – My Melody and Kuromi – in the show titled “My Melody & Kuromi,” scheduled for release in July 2025. Netflix is looking forward to this series, as they have unveiled a sneak peek image of My Melody in the upcoming show.

My Melody & Kuromi Have an Adorable Rivals-To-Friends Relationship

Originally designed by artist Yasuko Matsumoto for Sanrio in 1975 as a comrade to Hello Kitty, My Melody gradually gained popularity and eventually starred in her own anime series called “Please My Melody” starting in 2005. The show ran for four seasons and introduced human characters who served as friends for My Melody, but most significantly, it debuted the tricky rival of My Melody, Kuromi. Initially portrayed as a villain in “Please My Melody“, Kuromi later showed a more amicable side in series like “Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures“, particularly towards My Melody and the rest of the pastel gang.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel that this upcoming relationship in the Netflix series “My Melody & Kuromi” is destined for greatness! They complement each other perfectly, much like two sides of the same coin, making their dynamic a joy to behold.

Just as the enchanting “Rilakkuma & Kaoru” series captured our hearts with its stop-motion animation and charming style, I believe that “My Melody & Kuromi” is poised to do the same. The adorable felt doll characters of My Melody and Kuromi are brought to life in a way that’s sure to captivate audiences.

Though we don’t yet know the storyline that “My Melody & Kuromi” will unfold, the first look provided by Netflix Anime in January 2025 gives us a glimpse into the team at TORUKU’s – part of Wit Studio – ambitious plans to breathe life into these characters. Their intention is clear: to make My Melody and Kuromi as lively and engaging as possible!
