Constantly providing subscribers with fresh content through numerous new releases isn’t always guaranteed to be a hit among critics and viewers, but their latest sci-fi series is an exceptional example that has garnered widespread acclaim.
Stepping into the realm of streaming just last month on April 30th, this Argentine sci-fi survival series has swiftly taken the world by storm. As a movie critic, I found myself captivated by its unique narrative, which draws inspiration from the iconic Eisner Award–winning graphic novel “The Eternaut (El Eternauta)” penned by Oesterheld and beautifully illustrated by Solano López. Originally published between 1957 and 1959, this timeless tale has now been brought to life on the small screen, and it’s no wonder that it debuted at the summit of Netflix’s rankings. In fact, its immediate success led to a swift renewal for additional episodes. If you’re in search of a fresh, captivating series, look no further – “The Eternaut” is here to satisfy your craving for quality storytelling.
During the timeframe of April 28th to May 4th, the series “The Eternaut” ranked first among non-English shows on Netflix worldwide. It garnered a total of 10.8 million views and was watched for a staggering 58.3 million hours. This captivating sci-fi survival show claimed the top spot in a total of 13 countries, including Argentina.
In the United States, the comic book “The Eternaut” made its debut in sixth position amidst other popular choices such as “30 Rock” starring Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Colman Domingo, the final season of “You”, WWE’s series “Raw”, the Western drama “Yellowstone”, and “Ms. Rachel”.
Suitable for enthusiasts of science fiction series such as and, The Eternaut revolves around a band of survivors battling an extraterrestrial danger following an unanticipated, lethal blizzard that wiped out much of the population.
The Eternaut was transformed for television by Bruno Stagnaro, with Ricardo Darín playing the role of Juan Salvo, Carla Peterson portraying Elena, César Troncoso as Alfredo Favalli, Andrea Pietra as Ana, Ariel Staltari enacting Omar, and Marcelo Subiotto taking on the character of Lucas.
The first season of “The Eternaut” has received rave reviews from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an impressive 94% approval rating from critics, while the audience’s score is even higher at 95% on the Popcornmeter.
Netflix Has Already Renewed The Eternaut
Netflix doesn’t always renew popular shows prematurely, a fact demonstrated by recent instances like “Shadow and Bones,” “Kaos” featuring Jeff Goldblum, “The OA,” and even “Sense8” from the creators of “The Matrix.” Fear not, fans of “The Eternaut,” as it was swiftly renewed shortly after its debut.
Netflix’s Latin American programming head, Francisco “Paco” Ramos hinted that Season 2 will be crucial, as it will delve deeper into the science fiction themes introduced in Season 1, and these ideas will be fully explored and developed.
Nevertheless, The Eternaut is not expected to run too long. Producer Matías Mosteirin has shared their intention to produce only one more season, “We aim to wrap up the entire story in a satisfying manner, with approximately eight additional episodes.” He added, “The series can continue for a second season, but not beyond that.
The Eternaut Season 1 is streaming on Netflix. Season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet.
