Netflix’s One Piece Couldn’t Have Found a Better Actress for Nico Robin

Netflix's One Piece Couldn't Have Found a Better Actress for Nico Robin

As a devoted One Piece fan who’s been sailing the Grand Line since the early days, I must say that Netflix’s latest casting choices have me all aboard with excitement! Lera Abova, fresh from her Bumper in Berlin days, stepping into the role of Nico Robin, is nothing short of brilliant. She not only fits the physical description but also brings a certain charm and charisma that Robin carries in the series.

This week, Netflix’s One Piece unveiled some exciting news during their Geeked Week event. Not only has Joe Manganiello been chosen to play Crocodile in the live-action adaptation, but the series also offered a sneak peek at Tony Tony Chopper, who will be joining Luffy’s crew next. Furthermore, Lera Abova from Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin has been cast as Nico Robin in the show. This role is generating quite a buzz and it may very well prove to be one of the best castings for season two thus far.

Initially, in terms of physical appearance, Lera bears a striking resemblance to Nico Robin. Her tall stature mirrors the archaeologist whose abilities, granted by a Devil Fruit, enable her to sprout limbs from any surrounding surface. Lera’s past experience as a character who straddled the line between hero and villain in the “Pitch Perfect” series will also serve her well in preparing for her role in the live-action anime adaptation. As Nico Robin initially navigates the gray areas between being a hero and a villain, Abova has already addressed that aspect of her character.

One Piece Chemistry

During Netflix’s Geeked Week Event earlier this week, it became evident that Lera and Joe Manganiello have a strong working dynamic together. Initially, Miss All Sunday serves as Crocodile’s right-hand, assisting him in his plans to conquer Alabasta, but there’s a surprising motive that viewers may not expect. Abova’s excitement for joining the crew of Going Merry was palpable at the streaming service’s preview, suggesting a promising on-screen chemistry with the young Straw Hat cast members.

The live-action version nailed its choices when it came to casting the heroes and villains from the first season. Now, these characters like the Straw Hat Pirates are widely recognized names in households. Conversely, even the villains were given due importance, with Jeff Ward’s Buggy earning a notable reputation on Netflix since his debut in the first season. Considering this, it is clear that the casting team made informed decisions by choosing Abova, and showrunner Matt Owens himself acknowledged that Lera was an ideal fit for her role.

Nico Robin’s Role in Season Two

The live-action remake is committed to closely following the original storyline, implying that Nico Robin will primarily play a supporting role during One Piece’s second season, compared to her prominence in season three. However, when the Straw Hat Pirates reach Alabasta, be prepared for Robin to showcase her abilities in various forms. Regrettably for Luffy and his comrades, a significant number of her attacks will target not only the Straw Hats but also their allies in Alabasta.

In the upcoming second season of “One Piece”, it’s expected that Robin may initially remain a villain, but hints will be subtly introduced for her future shift in loyalty. If the live-action series adheres to the source material, Robin, known as Miss All Sunday, won’t join the Going Merry crew. However, the Straw Hats are preparing to introduce a fresh pirate, Tony Tony Chopper, into their ranks. A glimpse of this lovable reindeer doctor was caught during the Netflix Geeked Week event, suggesting that he will be digitally animated in the series.
