Netflix’s One Piece Remake: What We Know So Far

At AnimeJapan 2025, one of the major anime events, they revealed fresh news about various anime productions. On March 22nd, the opening day, One Piece made its appearance and unveiled a new vertical spin-off titled “One Piece in Love,” which essentially means “One Piece with Love.” This spin-off was created by Daiki Ihara and is being published in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+. The story centers around a young boy, a girl, and their friends who share names with the Straw Hat crew members. They bond over their shared affection for Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece franchise. Toei Animation will be producing this series, with Miki Kobayashi serving as the producer, while Yu Kamatani and Hazuki Omoya will take on directorial roles.

Fans have also received fresh news regarding Egghead Part 2, the long-awaited comeback of One Piece’s anime. For the first time ever, the show will air two episodes consecutively on April 5th and 6th. Moreover, a special extended episode of 83 minutes will be aired as well. The new season will be accompanied by an opening theme by Gre4n Boyz and a closing theme by Muque. Although these updates are thrilling, the series has yet to reveal any recent information about its remake for quite some time now.

Netflix’s One Piece Remake Was Announced in December 2023

2024 saw a massive online buzz when it was unveiled at Jump Festa that One Piece would be reimagined by the highly acclaimed WIT Studio, famous for producing the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga’s first season, and Spy x Family in partnership with CloverWorks. The director behind Attack on Titan’s Seasons 2 and 3, Masashi Koizuka, will be helming this project. Fans were ecstatic about the remake news as it promised a fresh take on their cherished series in contemporary animation style.

Approximately six months passed without any news from WIT Studio, but then they unveiled a collection of concept art and character designs that delighted the fanbase. The artwork depicted stunning scenes from the East Blue Saga, which will be featured in the initial season of the remake. Moreover, it was emphasized that WIT would not tone down the violence as seen in the manga, a stark contrast to Toei’s approach. This information was revealed in August 2024, but since then, the studio has remained quiet, with no further updates given.

What to Expect From The One Piece?

Contrary to the continuous airing of the anime by Toei, the upcoming remake will take a seasonal approach, with the initial season expected to encompass the first story arc from the manga – the East Blue Saga. In this narrative, I’ve witnessed Luffy embark on his voyage and assemble a crew of four individuals hailing from diverse islands. Each member carries their own aspirations, which lead them to join Luffy’s quest and vow to aid him in becoming the Pirate King. While the exact number of episodes remains undisclosed, if the first season aims to adapt the entire East Blue Saga, we can anticipate at least 20 or more installments.

Why Is There a Need for One Piece’s Remake?

The franchise “One Piece” has consistently been popular, but it soared to new heights following Netflix’s live-action adaptation. Since then, Netflix has been developing additional “One Piece” projects, such as the standalone spin-off series titled “Monsters” and an anime remake. Moreover, Netflix started broadcasting the original anime from the Egghead Incident Arc. However, the pace of “One Piece” has been a concern for quite some time now. When the anime initially debuted, it adapted approximately one and a half chapters per episode, but this was later reduced to less than one chapter per episode.

The narrative progression of “One Piece” has faced significant setbacks, frequently drawing criticism. Unlike other shows which air seasons, Toei Animation has been continuously producing “One Piece” for over two decades. Consequently, due to the simultaneous weekly release of both the manga and anime with a gap of two years since its debut, Toei wasn’t able to provide the series with a typical pacing found in other anime. However, they compensated by incorporating exclusive anime scenes and improving their animation quality over time. Despite this, they are currently addressing this problem by taking the longest break in anime history.

In July 2024, George Wada, head of WIT Studio, shared the motivation behind the remake in an interview with Real Sound. He discussed Oda’s ambition to boost the global popularity of Japanese manga. To achieve this goal, a remake is being planned as an introduction for those unacquainted with “One Piece”. Furthermore, Wada mentioned that the initial anime was made in a 4:3 aspect ratio and may seem outdated due to its animation techniques, which were developed more than two decades ago. This format might present a hurdle for younger viewers accustomed to contemporary animation standards.
