Netflix's Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Shares First Intense Trailer: Watch

As a die-hard fan of Splinter Cell, I’ve been eagerly waiting for this moment since the first glimpse of Netflix’s animated series was unveiled way back in 2018. Three long years have passed, but finally, during this year’s Geeked Week, we got our first taste of the new series, titled Splinter Cell: Deathwatch.

3 years have passed since Netflix unveiled a glimpse of their Splinter Cell animated series to the public, which was first confirmed at the initial Geeked Week event in 2021. During this year’s Geeked Week (2024), we finally got the first teaser for the new series, now officially known as Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. The debut video clip of the show confirms that Liev Schreiber will voice Sam Fisher and that the storyline will fall within the timeline of the video games. You can watch the video below.

As a gamer, I can tell you that “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” is a creation of animation studios Sun Creature and Fost, masterfully co-directed by the talented duo, Guillaume Dousse and F?licien Colmet-Daage. The action-packed series boasts Derek Kolstad, the brilliant mind behind the John Wick franchise, as its head writer, and he’s joined by Helene Juguet, Hugo Revon, and Gerard Guillemot from Ubisoft Film & Television as executive producers.

What is Splinter Cell: Deathwatch?

The new animated series on Netflix, titled “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch,” is derived from the stealth-action games produced by Ubisoft. While official details about the project remain scarce, a teaser trailer shown during Geeked Week gives us a significant hint. Snippets of Sam Fisher and Liev Schreiber’s voiceover are featured, and one intriguing scene shows a casket with the name “Douglas Shetland” etched into it. Recognizable to longtime fans of the “Splinter Cell” video games, Douglas Shetland was a character prominent in two highly acclaimed games within the franchise: “Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow” and “Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

In the world of the Splinter Cell series, Douglas Shetland was an old acquaintance of Sam Fisher who founded Displace International, a private military corporation. The storyline in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory uncovers that Shetland exploited his company to fan the flames of conflict between North and South Korea. However, by the end of the game, Shetland is no more, and his plot has been thwarted by a once-allied figure.

Remarkably, the appearance of Douglas Shetland’s casket in the opening trailer for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch suggests a significant hint regarding the timeline of the series. Given that Sam Fisher was compelled to eliminate Shetland at the conclusion of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, it’s reasonable to assume that the TV show is set during the period between the events of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Splinter Cell: Double Agent.

New Splinter Cell Game

It’s been more than a decade since the last major Splinter Cell game, with Splinter Cell: Blacklist being the most recent one. Ubisoft is working on remaking the first Splinter Cell game, but they haven’t shared any updates or previews about it yet. In the interim, fans might look forward to the Splinter Cell: Deathwatch series as a stopgap; however, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for this series, so it remains uncertain if the TV show or the new game will be launched first.
