NetherRealm Studios Hit with Layoffs

As a long-time gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of sadness and frustration upon hearing about the recent layoffs at NetherRealm Studios. I’ve been a fan of their games for years, from Mortal Kombat to Injustice, and I’ve always admired their commitment to delivering high-quality titles that push the boundaries of what’s possible in the fighting game genre.

Over the past year and a half, NetherRealm Studios has unfortunately become part of the growing number of game development companies and publishers facing job cuts, affecting thousands of people in the gaming industry.

According to reports and as confirmed on LinkedIN by Tony Lazzara, a QA analyst from NetherRealm Studios, the entire mobile team at the studio was let go. This team was responsible for maintaining live service operations for games like “Injustice 2,” “Mortal Kombat Onslaught,” and “Mortal Kombat Mobile.”

“Regrettably, Netherrealm’s mobile team was closed down last yesterday. This unfortunate event left many skilled individuals unemployed. We provided ongoing services for various titles including Mortal Kombat Mobile, Injustice 2, and Mortal Kombat Onslaught. I too was impacted. Each person I collaborated with on that team is an exceptional partner, full of passion, and brimming with creativity.”

Multiple ex-NetherRealm team members, such as animator Elizabeth Ramirez and software engineer Antonio De Francesco, have announced on LinkedIn that they were terminated by the company.

According to Insider Gaming, at least 50 jobs have reportedly been eliminated at NetherRealm Studios or its parent company WB Games, although neither organization has confirmed this information or disclosed the extent of the layoffs.
