New Amazon Sci-Fi Series Is the Anti-Star Trek (and Marvel Director Is Involved)

Amazon is working on a television version of the acclaimed science fiction series “Culture” by author Iain M. Banks. Known for rejuvenating the space opera genre, this 10-book series offers a distinctive perspective on advanced life compared to other works in the genre. As reported by Deadline, the adaptation will be penned by Charles Yu, creator of “Interior Chinatown”. He, along with Eternals director Chloé Zhao, will serve as executive producers for the series. Despite the current popularity of sci-fi stories like Dune, Foundation, Three-Body Problem and others on screen, an adaptation of Culture would undoubtedly offer viewers a fresh, unique experience.

According to reports, Amazon Studios is said to be calling the Culture project by the title Consider Phlebas – this being the name of the initial novel in Banks’ series. Iain M. Banks penned nine novels and one compilation of short stories within the Culture series from 1987 to 2012. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with an inoperable cancer in 2013 and passed away soon after.

Each book within the Culture series can be enjoyed individually, as they feature unique narratives and characters distinct from one another. Collectively, they offer a glimpse into an idealized society. The Culture is a diverse collective of humanoid aliens and artificial intelligences residing on stations and vessels dispersed throughout the Milky Way. They have evolved to a point where their economy is no longer based on scarcity, thus eliminating the need for labor to maintain themselves.

These tales typically focus on the Culture’s encounters with various civilizations, grappling with the moral quandary of when it is appropriate to intervene in situations that contradict their beliefs. Despite their advanced state, the Culture sets even greater ideals as goals. The books also demonstrate multiple methods through which sophisticated societies can flourish. Essentially, these stories delve into ethics, warfare, espionage, and the concept of a perfect society.

As a film enthusiast, diving into the first novel titled “Consider Phlebas” by Iain M. Banks, I found myself immersed in the epic struggle between the Culture and the Idiran Empire – a conflict that echoes throughout other books in this captivating series. However, what sets this book apart is its focus not on the Culture, but on an Idiran agent named Bora Horza Gobuchul. This narrative choice challenges the conventional trope of an individual hero shaping history’s grand tapestry, while simultaneously exploring the harrowing reality and futility of war.

Amazon’s work-in-progress titled “Consider Phlebas” has yet to be confirmed for release on Prime Video, so its arrival remains uncertain. On the other hand, Banks’ “Culture ” novels are already accessible in print, digital, and audiobook versions.
