In the upcoming “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie, BDX Droids – the advanced animatronic robots that entertain guests at Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge lands – will make their first appearance on the big screen. This was announced during Walt Disney’s 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders Webcast, where James Gorman, Chairman of the Board, unveiled these Star Wars-themed animatronics as part of the company’s growing technological endeavors. These compact, autonomous droids exhibit emotions and can move independently while responding to commands. Their big-screen debut coincides with Lucasfilm generating excitement for the first Star Wars theatrical release since 2019.
Since their debut during the Season of the Force event in 2022, BDX Droids have earned a significant following at Disney theme parks. These droids are the product of collaboration between Disney Research and Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development teams, showcasing the latest advancements in robotics technology. Available in three color options – blue, green, and white – these marvels were first seen in action at Galaxy’s Edge, Disneyland, in October 2023. Impressive features include navigating uneven terrain effortlessly and dancing without losing balance.
As a dedicated movie reviewer, I couldn’t help but be charmed when Lucasfilm Story Group member Matt Martin affectionately dubbed the newly unveiled droids as “Sweet babies.” During their development stages, these mechanical marvels were informally known as Huey, Dewey, and Louie, a nod to Disney’s beloved triplets. However, these playful nicknames were merely internal designations, not their official identities.
Over months of what Disney referred to as “Droid Training,” these adorable automatons transformed into the BDX Droids we know today. In promotional materials, they are described as “playful, curious, and cute” companions exploring Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, the setting for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land. These charming droids officially made their debut for park guests, ready to share their adventures with us all.
The Mandalorian & Grogu: What We Know About the First Star Wars Film Since 2019
In a notable leap for Lucasfilm, the movie titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by its series creator Jon Favreau, marks their first theatrical Star Wars release in seven years. Filming concluded in October 2024, with a planned release in May 2026. This film continues the thrilling journey of Din Djarin and his Force-adept sidekick, engaging audiences who have followed their story across three seasons on Disney+. The shift from television to cinema underscores Lucasfilm’s faith in the characters’ potential for a feature film, particularly after the varied reactions to the ending of the sequel trilogy with The Rise of Skywalker. Interestingly, this movie is being made on a more modest budget compared to previous films in the Star Wars series. As per the California Film Commission, the production budget for “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is around $166.4 million, which is significantly lower than the $245-317 million budgets of the sequel trilogy films.
Though specifics about the storyline are being kept under wraps, there’s a buzz of anticipation surrounding the cast reveal. Sigourney Weaver is set to play a high-ranking character, while Jeremy Allen White is rumored to lend his voice to Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son. Jonny Coyne has been tapped for an Imperial Warlord role, implying ongoing confrontations with remnants of the defeated Empire. Lastly, Katee Sackhoff hinted at a possible comeback as Bo-Katan Kryze, vaguely mentioning that she “won’t be in armor in 2025,” without confirming whether she was filming in 2024.
There’s chatter among fans that the movie could revolve around a rescue operation for Rotta the Hutt, and there are whispers that Embo, a character known from the animated series “The Clone Wars”, might be portrayed as the main villain. Some leaks hint that Dave Filoni, who previously voiced Embo, could reprise his role in this live-action debut. Such plot points would deepen the themes of the criminal underworld that have been a cornerstone of “The Mandalorian” since its launch.
The Mandalorian & Grogu comes to theaters on May 22, 2026.
