As a long-time fan of the Civilization series, I must admit that I’ve been both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming release of Civilization 7: Humankind. The new Civilization 7 Humankind esc Civ swap mechanic has fans worried.

Ever since the unveiling of Sid Mier’s newest game, fans have found themselves equally excited and apprehensive about its upcoming launch.

But what is the message that has got everyone up in arms?

Civilization 7 Humankind, Esc. Civ. Change Mechanic

2K recently unveiled a gameplay preview for the forthcoming Civilization 7 video game. This new title is scheduled to hit the shelves in February 2025, featuring revised mechanics compared to its predecessor.

The design boasts a modern, sleek aesthetic and comes packed with numerous innovative features and settings. However, it introduces a contentious mechanism which has sparked unease among certain enthusiasts. Yet, since the game hasn’t been released, what’s causing apprehension remains unclear.

Indeed, the fresh civilization dynamics in Civ 7’s “Humanity” feature closely resembles mechanics found in the original strategy game. In a parallel game named “Humanity,” there exists a mechanism called “cultural exchange.” When certain turns have elapsed and specific conditions are fulfilled, players can opt to trade their culture for another.

They could go from British to Spanish, vice versa, and so on. But this mechanic was somewhat controversial, even among Humanity fans.

It seems that Sid Meier was influenced by the mechanics of Humankind, as is evident by the release of Civilization VII.

Once specific events and requirements have been fulfilled, a player experiences a shift in their civilization. This isn’t about a new leader taking over, but rather transitioning from one civilization to another, such as moving from Egypt to Mongolia. To accomplish this transition smoothly, it’s crucial that you were initially situated near three horses; otherwise, your civilization may evolve into Songhai!

Workers are no longer operational units for the field. They have effectively been phased out, though the specifics of their replacement remain unspecified. What is clear is that workers as we once knew them no longer exist.

Many players are not thrilled about the incorporation of the new Humankind mechanism in Civilization 7, particularly those who enjoy sticking with a particular leader during gameplay.

The Cleopatra to Genghis Khan Pipeline Is Real

It seems there’s some confusion about the latest Civilization 7 mechanism inspired by Humankind, as many players aren’t finding it appealing. One reason could be that this feature is part of Sid Meier’s Civilization, not Humanity, which was a unique mechanic that initially turned off quite a few people when it was first introduced.

The explanation is that over time, your civilization or empire fails to maintain its unique identity. It’s no longer accurately reflecting the historical trajectory of a Russian empire. By turn 40, I discovered gunpowder and transformed into a Chinese-style civilization!

Instead of transitioning haphazardly from one topic to another, it seems more reasonable and less ostentatious. Some have proposed an exchange of leadership figures, such as the U.S. exchanging George Washington for another president, which could bring about a change without significant alterations to their resumes. However, I’m afraid that is not going to happen.

As a fellow gamer, I’ve got some disappointing news for those who fancy focusing on a single iconic figure like Cleopatra. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t cater to that preference. Plus, the roll of the dice (RNG) can sometimes lead you down a path you might not be fond of. For instance, if you don’t start near the horses, you won’t have the chance to become Genghis Khan, and so forth.

But of course, every new mechanic in any Civ game has been met rather negatively. So maybe this is a case where they just need to iron out the kinks before people like it. Let’s be real: no one enjoys any Civ game on day one.

Will the gameplay of Civilization 7 Humankind, inspired by human history, ultimately resonate with players, or will it struggle like a player aiming for a religious victory in Multiplayer, potentially facing challenges and eventual decline?
