As a lifelong fan of DC comics and someone who has been following James Gunn’s work since his days with Guardians of the Galaxy, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Creature Commandos series. The latest photos from the show have only fueled my anticipation, especially the hint that Sgt. Rock might make an appearance.
The highly-anticipated animated series Creature Commandos, from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, is set to premiere on Max in just three months. Previews of the show’s unique cast of monsters were released last Thursday, potentially hinting at an intriguing detail.
In a recent social media post, pictures shared by Gunn showed him with his fellow soldiers from the World War II unit, Easy Company. While the identities of the two men standing next to GI Robot weren’t explicitly mentioned, fans have suggested that the taller figure might be Sergeant Frank Rock, who is famously known as the comic book character Sgt. Rock.
Who Are DC’s Easy Company?
Originating from the 1959 issue #81 of “Our Army at War,” Bob Haney and Ross Andru introduced the Easy Company – a WWII infantry group primarily commanded by Sgt. Rock. This team, whose individual members are given nicknames to conceal their civilian identities in battle, is composed of an assortment of skilled men. Although GI Robot has not been associated with the Easy Company in previous comics or adaptations, it’s worth noting that he too fought in WWII, often handling missions deemed too perilous for human soldiers.
It’s worth noting that in their initial animated appearance back in 2014, with the special called “DC Nation: Creature Commandos”, Sgt. Rock has had some connection. Whether this link will translate into Sgt. Rock making his DC Universe debut in the upcoming “Creature Commandos” series isn’t a certainty, but it could potentially provide an intriguing Easter egg for the franchise moving forward.
What Is Creature Commandos About?
Creature Commandos follows a covert squad of imprisoned monstrous beings, enlisted for tasks that are far too risky for human execution. In dire situations where all other solutions have proven futile… these creatures become your least favorable, yet potentially effective choice.
As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of the star-studded ensemble in the upcoming series “Creature Commandos”. I’ll be joining Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as both GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. This series is the brainchild of James Gunn, who’s not only writing it but also serving as an executive producer. It’s based on DC characters and produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, with Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register sharing the executive producer role. Rick Morales is overseeing production as a supervising producer. Can’t wait to embark on this incredible journey!
Creature Commandos will premiere exclusively on Max on Thursday, December 5th.
