As a lifelong fan of gritty noir stories that delve deep into the human condition, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of B. Clay Moore and Mack Chater teaming up for DSTLRY’s first crime series, Last Flight out of Wichita. Having grown up on a steady diet of Fritz Lang films and Saul Bass designs, I can hardly wait to immerse myself in the decadent, gritty world that Chater promises us.
Crime comic writer B. Clay Moore is back, partnering with artist Mack Chater (known for works like “Briggs Land” and “Sword Daughter”) on a new project titled “Last Flight out of Wichita“. This series will be published by DSTLRY, who tease an intense neo-noir story filled with critical situations, questionable choices, and harsh repercussions that fans of crime dramas such as “Fargo”, “True Detective”, and “No Country for Old Men” would enjoy. The 48-page first issue of “Last Flight out of Wichita” is set to be released in February, with pre-orders available until January 13th. Here’s a summary of the series provided by the publisher:
1977’s “Last Flight out of Wichita” portrays the disintegration of the American Dream post-war, focusing on two Vietnam veterans grappling with financial struggles in the Midwest. In a desperate attempt to get by, they become entangled in the tumultuous criminal underworld of Kansas City, facing off against ruthless mob bosses and treacherous double-crosses. Unknowingly, they find themselves caught up in the crossfire of the infamous Purple Capsule Gang and other rival gangs fighting for dominance. This chaotic sequence of events sets a new standard for intense, pulse-pounding crime comics, meticulously orchestrated.
DSTLRY Calls Last Plane out of Wichita an Epic Crime Series
According to Moore’s statement, ‘Last Flight out of Wichita’ explores various strategies individuals employ in pursuit of an unattainable American Dream through traditional means. The story unfolds in 1977, during the tail end of a recession. Our main characters are Vietnam veterans whose lives have been irrevocably affected by forces beyond their control. In their desperation, they opt to act independently from the established system, but soon discover that there are always other influential figures operating outside its boundaries. And when these individuals are provoked, there’s no one to turn to for assistance.
Chater notes that Noir’s stunning visual style was primarily developed during the ’50s and ’60s by filmmakers like Fritz Lang and graphic designers such as Saul Bass. He further explains that the genre moved out of the shadows in the 70s, revealing all its scars, offering a luxuriously dark portrayal of guns, drugs, and endless nights without sleep.
