New Cyberpunk 2077 Animated Project Confirmed by CD Projekt Red

As a diehard fan of the Cyberpunk universe, I can hardly contain my excitement! The news that CD Projekt Red is working on another animated project set in Night City is music to my ears. Having waited patiently for over a decade for more details on the game, and then experiencing the rollercoaster ride that was the release of Cyberpunk 2077, I can’t help but feel like this new project might just be the cherry on top.

In September at Netflix’s Geeked Week event, developers CD Projekt Red hinted about a new Cyberpunk 2077 project. Now, after staying quiet for some time, they have confirmed that fans will revisit the cyber-ruined Night City in an upcoming animated series. While details are scarce, Netflix’s announcement of their return to the world of Cyberpunk was a delightful surprise for many earlier this year. As reported by Insider Gaming, the untitled new project was officially discussed during CD Projekt Red’s latest financial presentation. Piotr Nielubowicz, the company’s chief financial officer, confirmed that they are collaborating on something new regarding their Cyberpunk universe in today’s presentation.

It’s great news to share with you all! We’re currently developing another animated series, this time within the Cyberpunk universe, and it’s scheduled for release on Netflix.

News about Nielubowicz’s affirmation on the upcoming Cyberpunk animated series follows reports that more than 30 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077 were sold, and that the sequel will commence complete development once The Witcher 4 (Project Polaris) has been finished. You can find the original announcement for the Netflix Cyberpunk series in the video below.

It seems CD Projekt Red hasn’t provided more information on their upcoming Cyberpunk project as of now. It’s undetermined whether Studio TRIGGER, responsible for Edgerunners, is involved or if another team is taking the lead. However, it can be anticipated that there will be stunning visuals, innovative technology, and a good dose of gore.

It’s possible that the game “Cyberpunk 2077” is more famous for its name than for its gaming experience. Ever since it was first unveiled in 2013, gamers have eagerly anticipated more information about the game. After a long wait, including a re-presentation at E3 2018 and the announcement that Keanu Reeves would play Johnny Silverhand, anticipation for the game reached extraordinary levels. However, when “Cyberpunk 2077” was launched in December 2020, it became apparent that it wasn’t ready to be released yet. Numerous game-halting bugs and frequent visual glitches made the game unplayable for some at launch. As time passed and patches were applied, many eventually had a chance to fully appreciate the game, which was later followed by the release of the “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” spinoff series.

The animated series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” was produced by renowned Studio TRIGGER (responsible for “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann”). The story follows David Martinez, a talented teenager who finds himself in the grim and crime-filled metropolis of Night City alongside a complex and endearing ensemble. This series has gained widespread appeal among fans of the video game (and those who aren’t), earning numerous awards such as Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. However, it appears that the upcoming “Cyberpunk” project will not be a continuation of “Edgerunners”.

It’s worth noting that the popularity of Edgerunners, an anime based on Cyberpunk 2077, significantly increased the number of players in Night City. After its release, over a million new players flocked to this game, causing something of a revival for what was once a neglected title. This surge of interest could potentially pave the way for another Cyberpunk project, which might further propel the franchise towards the initial goals it had set, despite a sequel and live-action movie already being in development.
